Making a Custom Leather Belt in 60 Seconds

Here is a condensed video of me making a one-of-a-kind leather belt!

All my belts are hand cut from Hermann Oak full grain natural veg tan leather. I then shape the belt and free hand draw a unique tooling pattern directly onto the leather with an 8B pencil. Quick case the leather with water and begin carving with my swivel knife. After all my main cuts are precisely made, I begin striking a variety of stamping tools with my maul to leave all the permanent impressions that bring the design to life. Beveling, shading, and all the other various detail tools make simple line art into a design that now pops! I finish the pattern off with more precise decorative cuts that add flow and movement.

After the leather dries, I begin the finishing process with a fresh coat of 100% pure neatsfoot oil and allow it to evenly soak into the leather. From there, by customer request, I will then use a paint brush to hand dye the borders and/or background of the design. After dye work, I will begin the antiquing process which helps highlight all the micro details from the tool impressions and swivel knife cuts. Once antiquing is complete we will add a final top coat and allow to dry.

I make all my belts doubled layered, which adds more body, or structure to the item and can help prolong usability of the belt overtime. I bond the two pieces together with a very strong adhesive, contact cement, and then sew the item on my Cobra Class 26 sewing machine.

As I move onto the edges, I first bevel the corners of the belt and then hand sand until I reach a desired “texture” of grain. After sanding, I hand burnish the edges to seal them up to help prevent moisture absorption and aid in the belt sliding through belt loops.

Finally, I hand punch all the holes needed for buckle attachments and belt tip holes.

I've gotta ask, why aren't you using the polished side of your marble?

Amazing work as always. I wish I'd get more custom belt orders instead of holsters. Is what it is. I'm booked solid for the holidays this year, kinda nice, kinda stressful lol. Hope you're pumping em out too

Just got my first belt tooled, watching this getting pumped for the next steps. This video lays it out perfectly! Debating about not putting a leather backing on the belt so it’s lighter for everyday wear. It’s about 9 oz leather with basket weave 2/3rds of the way down with an oak leaf/ acorn tooling the rest of the way to the tip. Is two layered belts necessary when tooling??
