Hi Folks
In this video I look at the Sulawesi crested macaque monkeys. They are an endangered mammal with only 5000 to 6000 left in their native home from habitat loss and hunting. Dublin Zoo among other Zoo around Europe and the world are trying to save this beautiful primate

Although you can't see it in the thumb nail, crested black macaques were named for a ridge of fur that comes off the tops of their heads. It almost looks like a Mohawk. These monkeys are covered in black fur except for their faces and pink rear ends.

Crested black macaque groups have about four times as many females as males. The groups are led by one or more dominant males. The number of dominant males depends on the size of the group, and there might be up to four. Like many primates, crested black macaques participate in social grooming, which serves as a bonding activity and keeps group members calm.

These monkeys are able to mate when they are four to six years old. Once they reach this level of maturity, young males are kicked out of their birth group. Often they will spend some time with a group of other outcast males before finding a permanent adult group. Males and females mate with multiple macaques. However, dominant males try to ''out-mate'' the other males by having more partners.

Crested black macaques can mate any time of year. After six months, a single baby is born. The mother will care for it while it nurses, which it will do until it is a year old.
