Constitution Class Saucer Separation

Project Blue Book UFOs that were reported as saucers and cigars were effectively assembled into the design of NCC-1701.

To make this point, a saucer separation was first proposed in the Original Series episode "The Apple" on 13 October 1967...

Support for this possibility exists in the Third Revision of the TOS Writers Guide dated 17 April 1967. It reads:

"What about the ship's main saucer-like section?
This is the portion of the ship in which we will be and which we will use most. It contains at the very top the shin's bride and general operation facilities. This "saucer" is approximately twenty stories thick at its widest spot, containing also primary ship's departments, living accommodations, recreational facilities, laboratories, and is in fact a completely self-sustaining unit which can detach itself from the galaxy drive units and operate on atomic impulse power for short-range solar system exploration. "

Trekkies would not actually see this take place until 28 September 1987 with a Galaxy Class starship under the command of Jean Luc Picard.

The fan driven Star Trek Continues delivers a saucer separation with a Constitution Class starship on 13 November 2017...that fulfills the 17 April 1967 description of how the saucer could operate. This is the last episode of Star Trek Continues, entitled "To Boldly Go: Part II".

And Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi) from TNG voicing the ships computer, the role her on-screen mother (Majel Barratt) originally performed

A good friend informed me of Star Trek Continues knowing I was a fan of the original series. That was more than two years ago and I just watched the entire series in the last two days. Great stuff! I truly enjoyed it and wish there was more.

This is the first time I've come upon this group. I have to say, their sets are incredible! I'd read that the original was suppose to be able to do this but budgets wouldn't allow for it. Fans are what keeps this going. This was some beautiful work. I hope to find more. 🤟

Strange to see the original Enterprise doing a saucer separation unlike the Enterprise-D in TNG but still cool. 😊

Never thought I'd see Vic as Kirk....A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one

I think this is why the Federation Class Dreadnought had the warp nacelle attached to the saucer section.

For those curious about the launch date of NCC-1071 Constellation as a CONSTITUTION-class starship.

All canonical sources, such as Memory Alpha and Okuda's Star Trek Encyclopedia state that NCC-1700 Constitution was launched first and we can find that the Constellation's out of sequence number is based on early budget and timing limitations that led to a simple reordering of the decal sheet from the AMT Enterprise Kit. That is stated specifically in the Star Trek Encyclopedia.

You can also find the following statement elsewhere:

The prototype U.S.S. Constitution NCC-1700, commissioned on Reference Stardate 1/8801.04 (04 January 2245, ) and followed by a new ship each month thereafter:

U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 on Reference Stardate 1/8802 (February 2245)
U.S.S. Constellation NCC-1017 on Reference Stardate 1/8803 (March 2245)
U.S.S. Intrepid NCC-1631 on Reference Stardate 1/8804 (April 2245)
U.S.S. Republic NCC-1371 on Reference Stardate 1/8805 (May 2245)
U.S.S. Farragut NCC-1647 on Reference Stardate 1/8806 (June 2245).

These first vessels spent the next two years undergoing shakedown trials, while the remaining seven vessels of the initial authorization were built and commissioned over the next five years, ending with the U.S.S. Hood NCC-1703 on Reference Stardate 1/9307 (July 2250).

Tom, a month or so back I just might have found a way to back up your idea that the design of the Enterprise was based on various shapes (cigars, saucers, etc.) of UFOs, beginning in 1947. 1947 was "the summer of the saucers" and included not only Roswell but pilot Kenneth Arnold's sighting near Mt. Rainier and his being credited with the first use of the term "flying saucers." Arnold's account was several weeks before Roswell and three days before Arnold's sighting was The Maury Island Incident. Maury Island is much less known but to me is more interesting in that the term "Men in Black" began there and it also had two fatalities- the pilot and co-pilot of a B-25 that crashed while transporting "classified materials" (ejected material from a UFO) back to its base in California. Anyway, I'll now reveal what I found. In the Franz Joseph Star Trek blueprints, the length is given as 288.646 M. That is 947 feet. While the FJD blueprints and Tech Manual weren't really canon, Franz likely got the dimensions from The Making of Star Trek book. The Smithsonian does state the same length as these references. So, did you catch what I caught? If you add a "1" to 947 you get... :) While not proof, it certainly does suggest that this might have been a hidden Easter egg. In addition, this might even be connected to the famous number "47" usage in Star Trek. Sure, the story is that it was started by Joe Menosky when he joined the writing staff in season 4 of TNG. However, in the first broadcast episode of TOS (The Man Trap) is a victim that is found in a corridor. He is wearing what is a radiation suit. I found this around ten years ago but on the suit are numbers and there is indeed a 47 within a number set. The same suit was worn in The Corbomite Maneuver. While these episodes were shown nine episodes apart, I believe they were filmed very close to each other. The Corbomite Maneuver was the first episode shot, after the two pilots. It was delayed due to finishing the special effects. If this 47 connection to Star Trek was indeed really begun with TOS and not TNG, it sort of changes the story, doesn't it? It's "fascinating" to consider. Oh, and to really expand my observation (and yours), I have noticed 47s in the majority of ALL series and films over the many decades. For example, the rad-suit in TOS was first used in a 1964 episode of The Outer Limits (Production and Decay of Strange Particles). Yet another "coincidence" was that a certain Leonard Nimoy had a small starring part in it. I think I need a glass of Tranya... or two. LLAP

Awesome I always wondered about that. Seems a little strange They briefly talked about it on the TV show. Neat to actually see how it would work for a Constitution Class NCC-1701 separation I like it. Awesome effect.
