I believe the reason it slid off is because the x mark has put on too much of the paste, resulting in excess, unnecessary residue which causes it to slide off. While the dot just had enough paste to not have any excess and avoid sliding off. Applying the paste thingy was actually taught in css class and I am positive that the dot was the recommended one anyways.
