Israeli PM Netanyahu 'obstacle to peace' in Gaza, says US Senate majority leader

The Democratic Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, has said Benjamin Netanyahu has emerged as a 'major obstacle to peace' in Gaza, in a further sign of growing tensions between the US and its ally Israel. Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish official in the US, accused Netanyahu of bowing to pressure from 'extremists' in his cabinet and appealed to Israel to 'change course', warning that the US would be prepared to use its leverage to shape Israeli policy if it failed to do so.
