Canadian Word Origins: Toque

Canada has many unique words to describe things, such as two-four, double-double, chesterfield and poutine. I am exploring where those words come from.
Today, I am looking at toque, our unique word for what other countries call knit-cap or beanie!

As a Canadian, this is probably the first time I’ve ever seen toque spelled out

I think I've spelled it both toque and tuque, but never touque.
Parkade. I have never seen that used anywhere else but in Canada. Here in California, I sometimes intentionally confuse liquor store clerks by asking for a "mickey of rye." That's so Canadian it's kind of hilarious :D Another good one is garburator. Also, serviette (my mother would get annoyed if we called it a napkin).

I Scotland, we call a toque either a beanie, or a tammy (different from the traditional tammy, or Tam 'O Shanter that nobody really wears) or just a hat, it is very common, especially in winter, if it has a pompom, we may call it a bobble hat, my mum knitted my bobble hat with green Aran cabling on the cap, and black trim and big black woollen pompom, perfect for winter!

Canada is known for it's tokes and toques .

Is the Canadian I believe Chesterfield has fallen out of fashion, because I never hear anybody call an armoire Chesterfield

Which part of America called them to because if that’s the case, I might move there

Because it’s literally Canadian culture with American economy and that’s the dream

In French it’s pronounced “t-oak” rather than “too-ke” 😂

If it doesn't have a POM POM on top it is not a Toque. Till I saw this never knew it could be spelled differently.

A toque has a pompom. No pompom it's a beanie.

We call them toboggan but I think that's what you guys call sleds?
