How the hell did the parents not think, that the protagonist would start to doubt their beliefs after moving out into the world. If they thought everyone in the world lived the way they did, they wouldn't have had to worry, would they? So they must habe known the stuff that happened to him, was bound to happen. I wouldn't call that doing all they could to prepare them...
