For the blue shell, just keep an eye on who has items... and when the blue shell is used, hit the breaks and go in reverse. If you pass by number 2 before the shell does... the shell hits number 2.

Which brings more sage advise... watch to see if the person in the lead is doing something to give you the lead for a small moment.
