On December 27th, 2015, NYC-based (and Mentor, OH-raised) artist, Gina Telaroli, will join us at The Nightlight Cinema for a selection of her electric short films. Gina is a visual essayist, critic, programmer, teacher, and a manager of Martin Scorsese's video archive. Gina's work has been discussed in Film Comment, Slant Magazine, and in 2014, she was named one of Filmmaker Magazine's "25 Faces of Independent Film." Among the several short films we will show is 35 MINUTES NORTHEAST OF CLEVELAND, a film she made with her parents partially in response to LeBron's decision to leave Cleveland for Miami.

Gina will join us in discussion of her work and then we'll watch Agnès Varda's 1981 polychromatic documentary, MUR MURS, which explores the striking murals that decorate Los Angeles. Varda shot it in 1979-1980 after arriving in Los Angeles from France. Varda is known for her unique position as the only female filmmaker of the French New Wave. Her "cinécriture" (roughly translated: writing on film) explodes with color and livelihood in MUR MURS, which builds its appealing inventory as much from public street art as it does from the community that lives amongst it.
