This "kid's movie" was so dark. The fact that the old man did the ultimate sacrifice, turning himself into a villain, scaring off kids and the community, all of them never knowing he was protecting all of them from being murdered by the possessed house, that was so dark and sad. He would rather be hated and isolated rather than let another human being be devoured and killed.

Edit: You know how when you're such an evil person who did the most attrocious things like chiId serial kiIIers, people say HeII has a special place for you. For Nebbercracker, it's the opposite, Heaven has a special place for him. Like I said before, he made people hate him and alienate him to save them. He chose to be hated and alone rather than let others get hurt. That is both one of the saddest and most noble thing a person could ever possibly do.

Ngl, the story of Constance reminds me of that quote about how people don’t notice your sadness until it turns to anger and suddenly you’re the bad guy. Constance wasn’t really a monster. She was mistreated and abused.

The joke about chowders’s mom and her personal trainer went right over my head as a kid.

That basement scene was amongst the creepiest shit Ive ever seen as a child, it haunted me for a long time. Appart from truly getting the horror right, the movie is freaking hillarious. That one scene alone where the video player runs out, then runs back, chomps up some chips while looking DJ straight in the eyes, then running out again is probably the funniest scene ever.

The thing is, they knew EXACTLY how to make the atmosphere uncomfortable. First it hit us with the fear every kid had, the creep house. Second, it started talking about puberty, which is highly uncomfortable. Also just the characters look weird to a degree. Then there is the mean babysitter, which everyone hate being exploited and bullied. It also makes you feel uncomfortable by giving you the feeling of being home alone. And finally, the real scary part, it is all shot from the perspective of someone like you, a young, defenseless child. It puts you in the prospective of riley. Also a honorable mention is the part where the creepy guy falls and his corpse is on top of you, that's kinda creepy

Something I think this movie really gets right is its atmosphere. There's always this sort of creeping sense of unease and dread, even during the sort of comedic moments. It adds a hell of a lot to the whole creepy vibe this movie has.

Back in the day, someone at a weight like that WOULD be considered freakish enough to be in a freak show. It wasn't terribly uncommon for circuses to have a "World's fattest man/woman" exhibit with someone that you could easily see riding a rascal scooter around at a wal-mart today. Standards were just...very different back then.

What I adore most about this movie is that this was all filmed in mocap so the voice actors weren’t just sitting in booths reading lines they were on sets in mocap suits and acted out everything and it looks fantastic

One of my fave details about the movie is that all of the house’s onscreen victims (the cops, Bones, the dog) are not seen again until after the end credits, so if you leave as soon as the film ends, your left with the impression that they all just straight up *died.* Sweet dreams, kiddos!

If I’m being honest, the only part of the movie that scared me as a kid is the scene with Constance falling into the hole. It wasn’t until I was older when I realized she fell into the hole but was covered by cement. This movie really feels impactful when you realize Mr. Nebbercracker was only mean just so the surrounding area would stay away from his house. He’s been doing it for so long that it affected him mentally and emotionally. Constance is really a sympathetic “villain” when she was abused and taunted since she was part of a traveling freak show.

Even as an adult, I still love this movie for its art style, animation, characters, the plot, the twist and everything.

Its crazy that this entire movie happens because the old man did not build a fence in front of his house.
