I didn’t know what a floating axle was now I understand it makes sense thank you for this demonstration

Honestly this made sense and someone that has no mechanical knowledge I truly understood, it made a lot of sense.

Thank you for just jumping right in with no fluff. Awesome

Good explanation man these Advantek Dana 44s are really robust already compared to older 44s and now with the full float out back I reckon breaking axles will be a lot less likely on bigger tires.

I’m a truck driver. The floating axle on a semi axle pass though the hub assembly. So you can pull the axles without removing anything else. Now if you see a semi tractor pulling other tractors if they stop you more than likely see plywood in the wheel assembly on the semi tractors that is getting pulled. Now about safety I wouldn’t know but if you really look at a semi truck and trailer they are built to repair them. Like the inline six under the hood can be rebuilt in the frame of the semi truck even the cylinder can be replaced. The axles and differential can be replaced without lifting the truck off the ground I think maybe on the side of the roadway if needed. Now the Jeep’s axle I would guess it would pass through the wheel assembly like a semi truck except the front axles but the axle the hub holds the weight of the Jeep’s front unlike the back axle on my JK. But that looks like a upgrade in the future for my Jeep.

I am not mechanically inclined and appreciate your explanation!

I’m a mustang drag racer and who does his own installs but I had no idea what floating axle meant, I’m like C clip eliminators?? Nope, , now I get it. I bought a gladiator after a couple wranglers daily drivers because I wanted 44s without paying rubicon money. I don’t like running 35s on a sport. Love the gladiator

We bought our first Jeep a few weeks ago. Rub X with 35's. The rear axle is a Dana M220 wide full float and front is a 3G Dana 44.

Thanks for explanation of the FF axle.

love the Jeep look forward see what it can do on the trails

Great explanation. Very helpful. I have a question that perhaps you can provide clarity about. I have a 2023 Rubicon 392 and have ordered a 2024 392 because of the increased tow capacity. However, upon reading documentation online, Jeep clearly states that all Rubicons are getting the full floating axle and they mention the towing increase BUT they also say (paraphrased" (the 2.0 and 3.6 get an increase to 5000 lbs". SO, it appears that the towing capacity may not be increased on the 392. Unsure of why this would be? Perhaps cooling?

There is more than just semi-floating and full floating axles. There is also a three-quarter floating.
-Semi floating or "half floating" axle uses a carrier bearing on both sides of the differential carrier and an axle bearing on each end of the axle tube. The wheels are bolted to the axle itself. So this axle wood have 4 bearings, and use C-clips to hold the axles in place.
-A full floating axle uses an inner and outer bearing at each end of the axle tube(one is an axle bearing and the other is a wheel hub bearing) and an inner and outer bearing on each side of the differential (where one is a carrier bearing and the other is an inner axle bearing), this complete axle assembly would have eight bearings but the wheel is bolted to a wheel hub assembly which is bolted to the axle tube.
- The three quarter floating axle has the wheel hub bearing and an outer axle bearing like the full floating axle has with all the safety and load strength, but they don't have an inner axle bearing because the carrier bearing is strong enough due to that end not carrying weight. There is really no down side to the 3/4 floating axle.

I’ve been racking my brain about why the new Jeep can tow so much vs my 22 .
Thanks

I can't believe it's taken this long for Dana to update these, especially on what some would consider THE off-road vehicle. My Jeep Commander has floating axles and they're built by Chrysler, over 15 years ago for that matter

Great vid. I’ve been driving semi’s for years. I never knew it was called a floating axle and I assumed all vehicles had floating axles 😁. Now I know

Thank you for the explanation. Now I have a clue of what the different will be 👌

only c-clip axles allow the tire to fall off if you break a shaft

Dude, that was a excellent! Thank you very much

so if you have disc brakes on the rear, won't the caliper and disc keep the wheel in place if the axel brakes on a semi floating axel?
