The spray water from the tires is the problem. That's why the tires must not protrude over the fender. And there can also be small stones stuck in the tire that can become projectiles and affect other road users.

the tread depths are mirrored, it is 3 mms in the winter and 1, 6 on summer tires

In Germany Selling a car with defects and concealing them is prohibited in Germany and is considered “fraudulent misrepresentation” § 123 BGB.
It can mean a substantial fine or prison sentence.''

I'd rather be careful here, as “bought as seen” does not apply

This video is more about "how to make US-Spec cars (from US-Soldiers in Ramstein who sells their US-Cars before going home to the US) street legal in Germany" - Something the TÜV in Germany also checks before you get a EU-Legal paper to register your car.

Small correction for the OG vid @ 9:18. LED replacement lamps are technically illegal in the US and the bulbs usually say for off-road use only or check with your local laws. Lighting assemblies are designed with certain bulb geometries and intensities in mind that LED’s often don’t replicate.

Handwerkskammer = Chamber of Skilled Crafts
The German Chamber of Skilled Crafts (HWK) represents the interests of skilled crafts. It is responsible for the promotion, counselling and further training of skilled crafts enterprises and their employees. It also maintains the skilled crafts register, in which enterprises must be registered. It regulates vocational training in the skilled crafts and conducts examinations. It also mediates in disputes and offers legal counselling.

I only recently passed my German MOT, but only after the second attempt. That's because my drum brake was broken. Without a functioning brake, even if it is not used directly to brake the vehicle in traffic, it will be objected to and no MOT sticker will be issued. The repair cost me 250 euros. 20 euros extra for the inspection. Previously, I had already paid €149 for the general MOT test. Shock absorbers, CO2 emissions and other things were checked to make sure that the car would not cause an accident on the road. Not to forget the additions that you may have. All of these must be registered.

Tires that are not covered can throw mud, stones and other debris in all directions parallel to the car. This can hit front and back car windshields.

He has switched the winter and summer tyre minimum tread doth. Just think this way, in winter you need better or bigger tread for grip in ice and snow. In summer less so.

Tinted windows in the front: It is not allowed to tint front windows after factory by e.g. using films. At the windscreen films are not allowed at all, even transparent ones, because they could blister and thereby obstruct the driver's view. If the car manufacturer offers replacement windows made from tinted glass (which passed German safety tests and got an registration), you can however replace your windows with them - but that would be really expensive.

For being a master mechanic he missed quite a bit. First min depth is always 1.6mm, but in winter they suggest min 4mm (summer 3mm) and you get part of the guilt with police and your insurance in case of an accident with less than the suggested thread depth, second in winter you have to have tires marked for winter use (snowflake), third every axle has to have identical tires (not goodyear left and michelin right or something similar), in some other EU countries all tires have to be identical. Fourth - tires have to be covered fully at front and back and not only front like he said. The bumpers are illegal too because of the eyelet mounts. They are a danger in case of an accident. Eyelets are allowed, but only when in use. In Germany you use screwed in eyelets. I guess the cover in the front will be illegal too because of the sharp edges. Original covers look different. Everything not original need a TÜV check or a so called type permit. He is not right about the muffler and the 95db. The law is that a muffler is not allowed to be louder than original from the factory. There is a margin of +2db allowed. And new cars in the EU are limited to 74 to 80db. In Germany it's 74db. LED light bulbs are allowed in Germany, but only if they are TÜV approved (type permit) or you can buy complete new LED front lights with type permit. The problem with the not approved (China) ones is that they blind others. Germany about tinted windows is similar to BC.

But his comments about only when you want to change US cars to Germany. Common fails in Germany are rusty load bearing parts, brakes, defective front windows, tire threads, shock absorbers, oil leaks, leaky exhaust, not passing waste gas examination.

You can't tint your front windows because tinting your windows and reducing visibility for no goddamn reason is dangerous. ESPECIALLY with those "special guys" that tint them to almost black.

The TÜV stands for Technischer Überwachungsverein and they approve everything (from vehicles to electronics, toys, and all the rest consumer goods, they are strict. When your equipement is TÜV approved you know that it is safe to use.

No shade to the Master Mechanic, but I‘m willing to bet there are mechanics around that will not be so up to date on US specs to Germany, but if you are leaving your Corvette Stateside, you may find a better deal at a regular car dealership!

Germany doesn‘t care much for the typical ‚military status symbol cars‘, it‘s not worth the hussle to import them here…just get s a stationwagon that can seat your buddies, the ski, bike or kayaks and have fun on your day off!

My 5 yo car went in for it's first pink slip inspection this year. It was failed because the 30% tint was above the 10% limit.

Great video. I live in Germany and bought a German JKU but took off the plastic bumper. The steel part is still there but I was told this is not legal. I really do not get the half width tire coverage. If I hit a pedestrian with or without the plastic bumper, they are screwed either way. I am not sure I will notice the bump. ^^ Either way, I am looking for low cost interim solution for the next TÜV. I think for the next TÜV, I will do with doors off just to see how it goes.

No. German car rules do not differ from state to state, they are equal for entire Germany.
