The old man leaned in his chair, as if to scold at me. The soot crassed light from the lamp on the wooden table revealed his face... or rather revealed his lips, one cheek and the bridge of his nose. All of it was covered in scars and riddles like torn papyrus.
But his eyes... His eyes remained obscured, as if the gloomy glow of my fire feared to go anywhere near them... or perhaps was it the opposite. Perhaps it crossed some sort of event horizon it couldn't escape from, trapped in his dark orbits like starlight on the edge of a black hole.
- Have you ever seen ash falling from the heavens, he asked in a demented voice.
- No... I've not.
- It's a little like snowflakes, he continued, without seeming to care for my answer... very much like it... except of course for the searing heat.
I didn't say a word. Chills running down my back, as he giggled at his own simile. His faint voice merged with the howling winter storm that made the walls of the inn feel like cardboard.
- Oh... he went on. Oh I remember. The sky was white and men went blind from looking at it. We... we had masks, you see. So we could breathe. It felt as if the whole world was on fire. And we walked in the grey snow, as it pilled up like little hills and valleys... like... like shrouds. Millions of grey shrouds over millions of corpses.
