Nex 5r Real World Sample Video

In this HD Video using the Sony Nex-5r I will be using the SEL35f18 and SEL1018 lenses in a variety of real world situations. First I take a bunch of 24p FX video using the 35mm f/1.8 OSS lens of Layla inside the house with poor tungsten light. The lens was @ f/1.8 as you will see the depth of field is really shallow!! The shadow areas have a bit of artifacting, but the original video off the camera barely had any in iMovie before I exported it for YouTube. Next I use the ultra wide angle 10-18mm f.4 OSS lens in a few situations you should find entertaining I hope :)

Hello, I used iMovie to process the video on my Mac. Iwould go with the 18-55mm kit lens to start with, but I also really like the 550210mm and 50mm f/1.8 OSS lens as well ;)

I got it with no lenses, just the camera body. I them got the SEL1018 and the SEL35f18 to test out. I own the Nex-6 and a few lenses, so I did not need the redundant 18-55mm kit lens this time.

The 16mm lens with wide angle converter is a pretty good set-up for the money, but for the High Res Nex-7 24mp sensor it's not the best. The corners in particular are a bit soft and than lens shows it. The new sel1018 is a much better optical performer on all fronts. It is much bigger and more money though.

For video on the street it depends what you want to do? Do want to zoom in with the background out of focus?? If so, the 55-210mm (SEL55210) would be a great choice. If you want a wider angle on things, the SEL35f18 is pretty nice for the street!! The 16-50mm power zoom is great if you need smooth zoom while recording video and OSS.

No problem!! No it's not as good as the $1000 dollar 24mm Zeiss prime. It's very good though and sharper than the 55-210mm for example. About the same as the sony 35mm prime almost.

Well, I don't find that a negative, but a fault of the iMovie compression. A more professional grade program would probably do a better job with the video. The only other negative I have is no viewfinder for bright sun.

It get compressed when I Export the video out of iMovie. The quality it exports at is the issue I think, because the original video does not have that. It has to do with the compression in the black/ shadow areas.

Thanks Jay for the reply. I have a Carl Zeiss 24mm f1.8, would you say its the same size as that?
One thing I find irritating with all Sony NEXs is the internal flash is not raised high enough, so you get nasty shadows!

I was wondering if you could help? I've the NEX 7 with the pancake lens and the ultra wide convertor. If you have this lens setup as well, is there a massive difference between the 1018mm and the Ultra wide angle to warrant the investment. Also, I like night photography, so not sure how its going to affect the quality?

I had the same noise with my nex5r mounted as a dash cam.  I don't know if there's a way to stop it or find a mount that won't make the shaking sound.

Hi, strictly in terms of VIDEO end-result, are there any discernible differences between the NEX-5r/6/7 (besides the 7's mic input)? There are plenty of comparisons around the net comparing still-image performance, but practically none dealing with video performance differences. One thing I noticed in your video of the 5r, is it switches to 16:9 after you engage recording. Is there any way around this so that you can preview your shot it 16:9? Maybe switch still mode to 16:9? Thanks!
