It’s in California. Where Apollo Justice eats his hamburgers.

I find it interesting that Kanto is the only one of the regions that shares its name with its IRL counterpart. Though I do wonder what goes into the thought process in trying to figure out a new name for a region. Well...maybe not all of them. Alola is pretty easy to figure out as it's a play on "Aloha", but still...

this somehow unlocked a lost memory of me thinking the exact same, i had forgotten there was a time where i didn't know it was called kanto

I'm guessing it wasn't so much "lost in translation" as it was the localization team intentionally not wanting to name it a real Japanese region and letting the English audience imagine it as where they live or something

Considering that back in the 90s, most translations edited out almost anything that referred to Japan or any other countries and cultures, this makes sense.

I thought we had yo wait until Gen 2 before a distinction was made.

Also fun fact about pokemon regions: Unova is the first and only region to not share a name with its Japanese's counterpart, in japanese it is called Isshu.

Honestly, it would’ve been pretty cool if it was called the “Indigo Region”, since Red and Blue make purple, and Indigo is a kind of purple.

And then there's pokemon that have no region belonging to them

I thought it was Indigo also, I think it was from the Pokemon Handbook for Johto, since it called the Kanto league badges as Indigo league badges.

To be fair, most people saw the anime first, so it doesn't matter

Kanto isnt only a pokemon region but is also a real province in japan which is probably why they litteraly say real life places like "mew was found in guyana" or "LT. Surge was a copilot form america"

Considering that back then they probably didn't assume that there would be more games, the fact that Kanto is also a region of Japan and that localization at the time changed names all the time, it's likely they thought that it was "too japanese" and left it out for the international market

I also have this very distinct memory of them not referring to the region as Kanto (in the anime) until johto journeys. Ash talking to Gary.

Never assumed the area was named after Indigo Plateau. That would be like calling it the pallet region
