How are we supposed to approach this election as Christians?

In a world where many are casting votes based on emotions or the influence of social media, it's crucial that we look beyond appearances and rhetoric. Instead of focusing on how candidates present themselves or engage in debates, we need to examine their platforms and policies.

What do they truly stand for? What will they actually do for our country? Our responsibility as Christians is to seek leaders who reflect values that align with our faith, focusing on their actions rather than surface-level impressions.

In this episode, we give you 4 things that you can do this election season as a christian.

Proverbs 6:16-19 (NIV)
16) There are six things the Lord hates seven that are detestable to him:
17) haughty eyes,
a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 ) a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19) a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Thank you for the correction. I've repented for not praying FOR our leaders. This opened my eyes.

We should feel comfortable allowing our kids to hear our president speak without cringing. If they are spreading hate, lies, and admission to not being a Christian, then we shouldn't vote for them. I will pray for them all, everyday.

As a believer who is also a leader I want to offer another perspective.

We have 2 choices in this election.

Typically policies matter as the primary criteria for voting however this election has forced a different prioritization based on the 2 candidates in this race.

Character and leadership skills to lead are typically not the issue because you normally have 2 candidates who possess both and the primary difference is policy.

It is clear you are Trump supporters based on your comments and that is your right. I don’t have any issue with that.

The challenge I have with evangelicals is that they completely dismiss and ignore character and leadership, which is a critical requirement to be President, when it comes to Donald Trump.

We have a former President who literally speaks hate out of his mouth and on his social platforms, spent 4 years as President on Twitter complaining about anything and everything, calls immigrants aliens, incited a mob to riot and attack the US Capitol, this week spoke of a golfers private parts as a badge of honor, proudly stated he grabs women by the “p***, struggled to lead us through the Covid crisis, his wife has not been with him on the campaign trail this year and the list goes on.

These are not 2nd hand accounts, all you have to do is listen to him speak and follow him on social media.

But yet many evangelicals say, vote your values and choose someone who is most closely aligned with the Bible but “disregard”what the Bible says about Godly character??

We can't pray in love and live in hate and still think we are worshipping God- A. W. Tozier

I have a sincere question….how does this square with how the policies treat the poor, widow, orphanless, oppressed, etc

Policies don’t mean a thing to me. They can change it the minute they are in the White House, or get constantly blocked for whatever reason. Character in leadership means more to me than policies. Everyone can talk a good game, but hardly anyone have the skills.

Wow this really convicted me. As a Canadian I have been so disheartened by the Prime Minister we have had and the damage he has caused to our country. He is not an easy man to like let alone pray for. He has caused so many so much pain and suffering. Learning to pray for him is a tough pill to swallow for me. But I do understand the importance as a Christian to do so. Thank you for this.

John and Lisa,
While I agree with your admonition to honor the leaders and respect all, I have a few observations and questions to stimulate deeper biblical thinking.

I believe that the issue of character is much more important than it is presented in any go-vote message these days. When we dismiss unrepentant sexual sin, a torrent of slanderous, hateful, divisive rhetoric, lies, and dictatorial aspirations of our nation’s leader, we lose our high moral ground to criticize the moral decline of this nation. How can we judge sexual immorality of the liberal left if we excuse our leader’s adulterous behavior? Don’t we compromise the integrity of the gospel and our witness by disregarding the moral character of our representative? Pagan world is watching us and making their judgment about our faith based on our choices.

Secondly, I believe that spreading hateful slanderous rhetoric and promoting animosity is as egregious as murder in God’s eyes.
Is it merely a rhetorical device when Jesus says that “anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment” and anyone who says to his brother, “Raca”, is answerable to the Sanhedrin”? Is apostle John exaggerating when he says that “anyone who hates his brother is a murderer”?
I find it extremely harmful that a candidate who claims to represent Christian values, uses slanderous, hateful rhetoric like no other politician. In fact, he brought our standards & expectations down so low that most of his followers think that his rhetoric is the norm in politics. MAGA has been discipling the church for so long that we don’t even mind that they use God’s name to prop up Trump’s political campaign.

Thirdly. For me the holiness of God’s name is weightier than any political issue. It’s a tier one issue, if you will. Is the third commandment less important than the sixth?

Am I idealistic? Yes. But so is Jesus. He did not side with the Jewish “moral” elite in the culture war of his days. He chose the way of preaching the gospel, humble service and sacrifice over the way of political power.

And lastly, do you really believe in God’s sovereignty? I do and I absolutely trust that God can put the right kind of evil in the government to fulfill His purposes for this country and for the world. He is absolutely able to do it without me compromising the holiness of His name, my integrity and my witness.

I am thankful that many pastors are stepping up to the plate & TELLING CHRISTIANS THAT IT'S A MUST THAT THEY VOTE! My own Pastor Dusty Dean of Heartland Church shared the same thing on Sun., Oct. 27th. We are are having a special prayer meeting at Heartland this Wed. night to pray for this election!

The Bible clearly condemns us for speaking out against people we don’t like for the same faults and or conditions of the heart that we overlook in those we do like. The Word of God explicitly tells those who are called Christ-ians in 2 Chronicle 7:14, “ "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and I will heal their land.” Our country is at a precipice of imploding because Christians are not following God’s lead and giving others the right of free will. Instead of us allowing others to make their own choices, we exert our will on others just like the enemy of our souls does. There are blessings that come with freely obeying God. Let’s stop talking about it and be about it. Pray that God’s will be done. Amen!

Thank you so much for this! You did an amazing job communicating how Christians should think through this election.
Please do not stop, regardless of negative comments you may get. ❤ Voting is a privilege God has given us in this country. It grieves me that so many Christians are forsaking this privilege.

The problem is christian leaders dancing around the truth. While Trump is not perfect and I don't stand behind everything he has said, the choice is very clear. If you care at all about the safety of Americans and a secure border, VOTE TRUMP. If you care at all about the unborn and protecting their lives, VOTE TRUMP. As a christian, there is absolutely no justification to vote Harris/Walz. They are radically pro-abortion and it is unacceptable. Pastors need to stop being afraid to speak the truth about this. Lives are at stake.

I am a follower of Jesus Christ and it saddens me that every time I hear pastors talk about the election and say “vote the Bible” they then proceed to only speak about abortion and lgbtq+. There are so many other issues facing us and the liberties of certain Americans at stake that, unfortunately do not look like you all. And yet somehow, these two issues are your whole focus (oh I dare not forget to mention all the dangerous illegal aliens coming in to harm us). I don’t hear any pastor who constantly harp on these two main issues bringing up gun safety when countless children have been taken due to this epidemic, and not by the hands of “illegal aliens”. As followers of Jesus Christ we, of course, follow God’s leading in all we do. And God also gives us common sense. It’s clear who you’re saying not to vote for and who to vote for. Regardless of who makes it in office I can agree with you on one thing, as followers of Jesus we must pray! Pray for our nation, our leaders, those who fight for our country, our children’s safety, our environment, our families… we must pray. And we must not allow the spirit of division to infiltrate our hearts. God bless.
