BEAUTY STANDARDS AROUND THE WORLD... PROBLEMATIC?

preview_player
Показать описание
We tend to think it’s just us that have to deal with the unrealistic, sometimes toxic beauty standards - but in fact women WORLDWIDE are struggling to live up to their country’s definition what ‘beauty’ looks like. What's interesting is that while you may not fit into YOUR country’s ideal ‘beauty standard’ - you may perfectly and naturally fit into a DIFFERENT country’s beauty ideal! It just shows that even though we’re told that there’s only ONE way to look in order to be considered beautiful – that’s not the truth. In japan crooked teeth (yaeba teeth) are considered cute and women pay hundreds of dollars to have their canine teeth protrude, whereas women here in the west pay THOUSANDS of dollars to have their teeth made perfectly straight! In the west we’re obsessed with being tan, yet in other parts of the world they desire fair skin so much that they use whitening products – while we’re over here using self tanning products! How wild is that! It kind of indicates that no matter what we look like as women, it's never going to be 'good enough' for society. Not to mention that what is considered the 'ideal standard of beauty' is always changing - so I guess the only thing we can do is (as lame as it sounds) be ourselves!

The beauty standard is always the rich people looks. When the poor worked outside and the rich inside, pale skin was preferred. When Travelling became a thing among those who could afford it, tanned skin was the beauty standard.

I lived in japan many years and although I was admired there (blue eyes / blonde hair lol)I have never been as insecure as I was back then. Japanese people are so obsessed with thin bodies they noticed every single pound I gained and always reminded me of it. The year I left that country I cured from all eating disorders I had while living there .

The appeal of 'white skin' in India has been extremely damaging for many girls, including me. The fact is, most Indian girls have medium to dark skin tones (absolutely gorgeous imo) and only a few pale ones are considered beautiful by their family members, friends and neighbours.

I’ve said it before and I’ll probably say it again but this series should be shown in schools. You absolutely rock, Stephanie 💕

The more you travel, the wiser you get. As you live in a bubble, you will only see the things inside the bubble and disregard everything outisde the bubble. Expand your mind an knowledge and you will become more calm and find peace. The hard thing is to identify that you are in a bubble, it is not easy. *general advice not directed at anyone in specific*

For ckooked teeth, I heard a lot of people who lived in Japan (japanese and non-japanese) say that they had never heard of such a beauty standart until they saw a video talking about it on youtube. They said that it was possible that some people might like that kind of teeth because it made the person looks younger or with young features, but the high majority of people prefer normal teeth

I live in central Europe and here people bully me for being so pale. I don't like to tan, bcs my skin is sensitive for sun light, even if i put a lot of sun cream and it's scary and disgusting how in many countries skin tone matters so much.

It is so cliché but if you are a nasty person but you look gorgeous, I would not want you in my life. I didnt fall in love with my boyfriend because of his looks but because of his character and now almost 3 years later still together❤

This is a really good one. Whenever I hear non-Asian people talk about how Asian beauty standards are focused on white/pale skin they're so quick to say it's because Asian people want to look Caucasian and cite colonization as the reason. I get why your beauty standard videos are always so well researched now that I know you're a history nerd haha

Also wow the makeup look is stellarrr

I'm so sick of the toxic beauty standards in our society... It's making people sick and depressed.

Also.. Chloe Ferry used to be really beautiful before all the surgery.

Since you are a history geek, maybe a "beauty standards through history" would be great and interesting...

This is so true
I’m from Pakistan and we have tan skin here which is amazing but everyone wants fair skin
Women are literally going for whitening injections here🥴
Whoever is reading this comment
You need to understand this
Tan people want to be fair and fair people want to be tan
Thick people want to be skinny and skinny people want to gain some weight
Literally you are perfect the way you are
Your imperfections makes you unique
If anyone loves you they will accept you the way you are
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

This is quite interesting to think about. I'm from Portugal and the standard there is more like natural beauty, tanned but natural-looking, no obvious plastic surgery, a natural body without "exaggeration". Much the opposite of a lot of other western/European countries.
