Highlighting the urgent need to stop deforestation and the carbon pollution it brings, he details the work of the LEAF Coalition -- a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership that's channeling one billion dollars into protecting tropical forests -- and shares three building blocks for a robust market for forest carbon that enables economies to thrive while protecting natural resources.

As someone that lives in Brazil, I can GUARANTEE you that Mato Grosso is far from a good example of forest protection and the current president even less. The idea sounds beautiful but it's a fantasy sold to those that live far away from the problem. And besides that, it sounds almost insane to me that all the victories we had in this field over the past decades to him sound like they were only possible because the goodwill developed countries took pity on us and decided to help solve our problems. Of course that help is more than welcome, but don't take the credit away from the people that ACTUALLY made the biggest impact just so that you could sell that image of a genius that had a brilliant idea that will solve all of the world's ecological problems. Like... really?

as i know, forests do not absorb so much carbon every year, but, they absorb it and release it and sum is zero, but they hold carbon in tree trunks, soil, materials under water.

As a brazilian, I can assure that things in Mato Grosso are NOT as good as this gentleman puts. In 2021, the deforestation increased by 38%, and overall, in Brazil, the Amazon deforestation had the worst period in over ten years. The way Keohane brings the subject ignores the political aspects and the other movements and fights from indigenous people. Between 2005 and 2012, ALL of the Amazon Deforestation plummeted, which he forgot to mention, and you just can't ignore the role of the government in this issue. It's NOT the merit of private endeavours - which doesnt mean it wasnt helpful -, but of a whole circunstance and time period.
