2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e Review: The Plug-In Hybrid SUV To Beat
BMW has been on a mission to electrify its lineup, and the new 2024 X5 xDrive50e shows the brand is doing plug-in hybrids the right way. This midsize luxury SUV pairs a potent turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with an electric motor and a larger 25.7-kWh battery pack for an impressive 483 horsepower and 39 miles of all-electric range.
We spent a week with the X5 PHEV, using it as a family hauler in Michigan, and it proved to be an exceptional do-it-all vehicle. The driving experience is so well-sorted that it made our list of the Best Cars to Buy in 2024. The transitions between gas and electric power are impossibly smooth, with power delivery feeling linear and consistent whether you're in EV mode, hybrid mode, or running just the gas engine.
Acceleration is simply stunning for such a large vehicle, with BMW quoting a 0-60 mph time of under 4 seconds. Even without deploying all 483 hp, there's tremendous shove thanks to the electric motor's 194 hp and 280 lb-ft. You can cruise up to 87 mph on electrons alone. Yet the X5 PHEV retains the solid, controlled ride and handling dynamics BMW is known for in its gasoline SUVs.
Operating as a pure electric vehicle, we averaged 47 miles of real-world range – better than BMW's 39-mile estimate. And with both gas and electric powertrains operational, we managed 54 mpg in mixed driving. However, the bigger battery means longer recharge times, requiring a Level 2 home charger for overnight top-ups.
While the exterior styling is a bit plain compared to BMW's other new models, the interior is a high-tech showpiece. The curved display housing the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen is a striking design element. Material quality is excellent, but interior space is merely average for the midsize luxury segment.
The 2024 X5 xDrive50e starts at $73,445, and our tester rang up at $87,745. That makes it a pricier option than some plug-in hybrid rivals like the Volvo XC60 Recharge and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, but far more affordable than the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid and Range Rover Sport PHEV.
There are compromises to plug-in hybrids, but the 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e hits an exceptional sweet spot, delivering strong performance, excellent efficiency, and all the premium trappings buyers expect from a BMW SUV. If you can't go full EV just yet, this PHEV is about as good as it gets.
