in 6th grade i played this song when we merged grades 6 - 12 in a final spring concert the band director loved it so much he had tears in his eyes when we got done he asked the audience to stand up and sing along as we played the song a second time he wanted that for his mother who couldnt hear

Imagine if someone were to right a song like this today! Casting the U.S. Army as an avenging army of God? I should count up all the references to dying in war as being a kind of holy martyrdom, even being an imitation of Christ. Certainly @ one point the rebels killed by the Union soldiers are portrayed as the "grapes of wrath" being trampled under the feet of a vengeful God. An idea echoed in Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural, though he applied it to the whole nation.
