I think people who are introverts will really connect with this movie. People who struggle to make friends or meaningful relationships while others around them seem to have no problem. Often times the first thing people blame are their looks. While the movie does show there are advantages to having good looks (Edward is able to get laid and he gets a better job) it shows that there was a deeper personality issue at play. While improving his looks got him superficial successes, it didn't get him the one thing he really wanted which was a deep meaningful relationship.

I thought this movie was really good. I think it got it's point across in a way that avoided feeling apathetic and patronizing to people who struggle with relationships.

In a way it sounds like Ingred is fetishizing Edward and Oswald. Like she gets to be special cause she's with someone special.

I really love how thoughtful and comprehensive your reviews are, and how much attention you pay to the small nuances of films. There's an idea that attention paid is evidence of how much love there is for someone or something. It's clear you love film, as you devote so much of your free time to thoughtfully reviewing it. That is very appreciated, such a nice change in our superficial/sound bite culture.

The most poignant scene for me was at the end, wen he looks across the restaurant and happens to notice a depressed emo woman siting and being totally broody, probably going through the exact same thing he is, and it's like he's been obsessing over the wrong person the whole movie and his perfect partner or exact counterpart is sitting right there, he's literally wasted his life wit the wrong people. It's powerful because it happens so fast and if you get it when it happens you really get it and the instant is over in a split second.

I enjoyed the HR training/industrial film bit. I've had to watch a lot of corporate HR films, and the patronizing tone was spot on.

Something that annoyed me was that the mask Sebastian Stan brings to the play is literally Edward. Its not a person who looks like Edward, its literally Edward. And for someone who made such an impression on her she made a whole play about him, i cant believe she didnt recognize him and never said, "why do you have a exact replica of my friends face?"

Otherwise tho i loved it haha

Flowers for Algernon - read that in highschool and cried my eyes out. The book hit so much harder than the film for me. Haven't thought of that book/film in years. Thanks for that!

It sounds like a great film until... the last act which sounds like a twilight zone episode. I still want to see it.
