I always felt tranquil listening to this in the backyard with my Headphones on my back staring into the starry sky imagining I'm floating.

Written in 1940 by an American. It was like he channeled WWII at it's cusp. Transcendent. I recently saw a video where it was played, very understated, by a Polish college orchestra. The grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc. of the Poles who lost 6 million people in WW II. A 5th of their population. That collective sadness must resonate through those young adults' genes. So many in the US no longer realize what WW II was to a generation. A world generation

This, to me, is the quintessential musical piece that depicts the soul's ascent to heaven.

Absolutely beautiful. Sad but hopeful for what lies ahead for us all….our final departure of life. Exquisite.

Possibly both the saddest and most beautiful piece of music ever created. I first heard it at Princess Grace's funeral, , then at the final scene in The Elephant Man before Platoon used it.

I've heard this piece on my local classical station several times. Then I just heard it a week before my mother passed away. It hit my emotions like a brick. I think it's the most beautiful and moving thing I have ever heard...until I found Agnus Dei, the choral version. I've been listening to it every day for 2 weeks now since my mom passed away. It makes me cry every time.
Why am I torturing myself doing this? I feel like I need to hear it daily.

First I need to say that I’m probably older than some here, listening to this because we have been emotionally touched by this piece by Barber. Secondly I’m a close descendant of people who fled from Europe leaving behind their elders, their cousins, uncles and aunts. Unfortunately much of my family left behind died, at the hands of evil people. Very sad. My grandparents maternal grandparents were safe here in the United States but they had a neighbor who fled from Poland to escape the evil that would soon unfold at places like Auschwitz. So my grandparents and the neighbors took part in Radio Free Europe. When my grandparents died I vowed to enlist in the military so I too could help people be freed from tyranny and oppression. The very ugliness of that moment in the history of humanity was not anything we should ever forget or even consider doing again in the future of humanity. Sadly there are still many tyrants, many oppressors so so many who have hate inside them. I don’t think I’ve ever heard this musical masterpiece before when I haven’t cried. I’m bawling now and trying to type with the tears just pouring out.
See, my time in the military was very much sad too. Something bad happened with me and I had my brothers and sisters in arms that came to my rescue. I wouldn’t be alive today 44 years later if it wasn’t for my friends. They were my family when I was in Western Europe for several years. So now with the possibility of a tyrannical dictatorship in my own country here I am crying for humanity once again. I was actually sleeping for once and I have music playing. This just happened to be on the playlist of what song is next. In my sleep I heard it woke up to the tears and appropriately a thunderstorm outside at 8 am.
I hope that humanity can see the ugliness of these tyrants so they are taken away and imprisoned for their actions so humanity does not suffer anymore

Part of the sound track from the video game "Homeworld" both when they found their planet destroyed as well as when they found their original world. I fell in love with this piece from the first time I heard it. It was also sung with a choir. Very moving.

It's surprising that few people remark on the musical progress to the climactic moment of despair, where time stops and dissonance screams heartbreak, a somewhat Sisyphean ascent to catharsis, before this glorious, indeed sad piece, ends in restful resignation.
