The militarization of public spaces and activities is a lamentable fact of American life. The gigantic flag, the ceremonial presentation of "heroes", flyovers at sports stadia, are all components in an unrelenting propaganda assault on the nation as a whole. Indoctrination for war begins in early childhood and doesn't let up this side of the grave.

Incidentally, the Red Sox team plane was used in kidnapping operations aka "extreme renditions" carried out by the CIA during the so-called "War on Terror". Victims were swept up without warrants, legal redress or charges and flown to black sites in Romania, Egypt, Thailand and other countries. Once there, they were subjected to torture authorized by the highest officials in the U.S. government. So it's nice to see an old ball player welcomed back to the scene of past glories. It's not so nice seeing the occasion hijacked for yet another demonstration of blind imperial hubris.

Great baseball player, but not a real nice guy. Met him a few times, and he was "icy" each time.
