There's no better time to start fixing your lawn than now! Don't make these costly fall lawn care mistakes

Fall time is one of the best times to start or repair your lawn. The first mistake I see people making is they water too much or too little. As the outside temperatures start cooling down having too much water can cause lawn fungus. Having too little water can cause the grass to dry up and stress out. Ideally we never want the soil to dry up. The best thing we can do is adjust the sprinkler times to accomodate for the changes in the weather.

Lawn mistake number two is not removing the leaves from the lawn. The best thing you can do is to mulch the leaves back into the lawn. Leaves are packed full of nutrients such as zinc, manganese and nitrogen. These natural sources are just what the soil wants and needs.

The third mistake I see people making is lack of mowing. People end up tired at the end of the season. they've been mowing the grass weekly and now want to stop. It's common for people to leave the grass long at the end of the season. It is best to mow the grass more frequently and drop the height of cut. By the time the grass goes dormant I keep my lawn at 1" to 2" in height. This helps avoid costly lawn fungus's like snow mold.

The last lawn mistake we talk about is its common to stop fertilizing and feeding the lawn. Fall time is a fantastic time to fertilizer. I keep my lawn green throughout the winter by doing regular fall applications every 4 weeks. I focus on ammoniacal and ammonium based nitrogen, as well as a good feeding of potassium. My favorite fall fertilizer is a 7-4-14.

Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. My cold weather grass is the envy of the neighborhood, next to everyone’s warm weather brown grass in Myrtle Beach SC. Going to pump up the fertilizer. Looks green all year long. And they told me it wouldn’t last here. 😂

The mulched leaves make such a big difference and improvement to the soil- and the more microbial the soil is, the faster the leaf particles just disappear. I couldn't believe how fast some of the leaves just disappeared after I mulched, regardless of the chopped-up size...it's like someone comes at night and clears them away.
Since I have start-stop, phased leaf dropping all of October and early November, my process is just to keep mowing the normal pattern each week to constantly mulch up the leaves. And the mulching doesn't need to be 100% perfect. Everyone that gets their leaves removed basically gets to have a leaf free lawn for like 30 minutes before they start accumulating again, so I have no problem with imperfect mulching.

I love the fall! My (Utah) lawn is looking great right now. I renovated a few small sections of the lawn in September with some RPR, and just hit everything with fertilizer and iron last week! You timed it right with the leaves, I just mulched leaves a few days ago, and need to do another pass tomorrow. Wish those trees would just drop all the leaves at once.

I like to bring my height of cut down lower at the end of the season, simply because it makes leaf cleanup easier in shorter gras than my usual 4” TTTF.

If your mower isn't that great at mulching, but does bag well (I'm looking at you, EGO single blade...), that leaf/grass chopped up salad does make for good compost in a pile. I top off my raised veggie garden with my compost piles every winter. So at least somethig is getting the benefit.

Increasing potassium fertilization in the fall can lead to increased snow mold problems, look up Asian Turfgrass Center/PACE Turf research on snow mold by Doug Soldat and Dr. Micah Woods. I'm going to follow the MLSN guidelines for reduced potassium and I'll let you know how it turns out next spring, had some snow mold issues last year even following recommendations for cutting at 1.5" and removing leaf matter etc. but I also applied 1lb of potassium throughout the previous year (no potassium this year based on soil test). Keep slaying the lawns Ginja!

I want to make over my garden to make it more disabled friendly. I want to build an elevated borders & a path all the way around so I can access my borders. The grass that was already here when I moved in, is very patchy & has lots of clumps of grass, moss & weeds. Should I remove all of the old grass & have new turf laid or can I regenerate it? 🤔😀

Love the videos.
I dethatched and added seed about 6 weeks ago. I had good results, but it is kinda thin. I seeded at a rate somewhere between new seed and overseed .
Should I drop some more, or wait now until spring? Thanks!

Wouldn't longer grass blades photosynthesize better with less sun hours?

I have several good sized silver maples in my yard that are starting to drop. Would you mulch or suck them up? Only big concern with mulching I have is I have in the past had billbug problems, so will all those riped up leaves provide a good winter hideing spot?
