This is really great - My wife and I just bought a neglected 5 acre orchard in Sonoma County last year. I tried about half a dozen graft trials this winter and one of them was successful. This year we will be seriously evaluating which trees we want to propagate and graft next year. Many of the existing trees are seriously degraded with rotted trunks and other problems. I just wanted to thank you for your channel.

My 1st video I have seen of yours. I know it’s the 3rd video of a series but just wanted to say you are very easy to listen to and seem very educated on this and it has became my passion this past year. Liked and subscribed, can’t wait to see more of your videos. Thanks for the uploads and educating us on this kind of stuff.

The definitive statement on fruit tree "own roots" vs. rootstocks! Thank you, this is very valuable. I haven't seen anyone make the case so clearly for grafting to get the advantage of a particular rootstock.

Really great explanation. Unfortunately, the fruit trees I have grown in the past would freeze and I would cut them out. This is so helpful. - Rick

This series is perfectly timed. I hope you go into the types of grafts you find best for frameworking. Seems you're most likely to be dealing with unequal diameters most of the time. I've got lots of that coming up soon, my trees are mostly in green tip right now.

I'm quite pleased with the yield from my B9 root stock layering, 18" branches were pegged down in spring and gradually mounded about 4-5" with compost, could have harvested in Fall but the snow came early so I'm doing it now (late April). Per branch I'm getting six new stocks with 4 as good or better than the bought ones (which cost me $4 each) and a few small ones, so when the mothers really get going I can probably expect 20 pencil size stocks from each, and throw away the runts. The B118 are amazing, absolutely huge roots, say 6 roots about 16" long. The whole enterprise would make a good little business for someone who wanted to supply the hobby gardener with small quantities, it does take a few years to grow the originals stocks to a size where they can reproduce but there's nothing hard about it.

Hi Steve! What a wealth of information on your channel. I am brand new to fruit trees and everthing that goes with it. I bought a pear tree where the graft died but the tree is growing from below the graft. If i wanted rootstock from that tree, would i use that sawdust method you mentioned? Also, what would i possibly get out of just letting a tree grow from the rootstock?

Thanks for the amazing info! I just bought a bunch of rootstocks and I was wondering if I can graft them right on to my scion wood or if I should wait until the rootstocks have woken up and scion wood is still dormant or in your experience does it matter? Also can I plant them right after or should I keep them in a pot for a season?

How do you know the species of stock you need when grafting bushes into tree forms? Like a mugo pine onto a tree I can’t find online what species of stock I need

I have a question and just cant find a definitive answer anywhere I look. I am starting an espalier trellis/tunnel/courtyard thing. I have already planted some stone fruits and apple trees along this structure. My first cordon wire is 18" high but my trees where 2 or three years old when i bought them and they were not pruned to have branches that low. Is ot possible to take scion curttngs from the top new growth (or scions from another variety) and graft them to the trunk of the tree 6" or so above the graft union to add horizontal branching cordons to my tree? I feel like this should be possible but I cant find any examples of this aside from a heading cut with grafts around the cut. I do not want to do that

Can you graft a scion from a cherry tree on to an apple tree? Or does the root stock have to be the same fruit (i.e., sour cherry onto choke cherry)?
Thanks in advance for your reply! I have learned SO much from watching your videos!

Don't know if I'm being dumb here but I'm wondering if I can use smaller birch trees I'd like to get rid of as donor root systems to create an orchard? Loving the series but I'm very new to this...

I wonder if you could clone my Provence Quince's rootstock? Dip in rooting hormone, and into a jiffy puck, and put under a full spectrum LED?
