Here's something I was taught in college: If you see a chord written as a C minor 7th b5, it's an altered chord. If you see that same chord written as a half-diminshed (C followed by a diagonally-slashed 0), it's a half-diminshed chord, and always followed by a full-diminished 7th. (C followed by a 0) This helps you know what's next at higher tempos. That's how our big band charts were always written. Just a thought...Thanks for the Cubase chord pad link. You KNOW I'm gonna use that!

I've been woodshedding jazz piano for the past couple of years. This is hands down the most succinct and in depth explanation of interesting chords I've come across. Thank you so much.

Brilliant! Thank you. Not sure why I showed up to this class because I knew I would be out of my depth. I struggled through, even though you lost me about 4 minutes in. Although my brain and my eyes had glazed over, my ears were getting favourite bits of Steely Dan, Supertramp (who?), Gloria Gaynor and so on.
Chords- I can't tell you what it's called when I hear it but I know if it's what I want. Obviously it would work better on every level if I could say what it's called and know where it fits. I fumble around until I find what I want and coming to understand the theory behind related keys is helping to narrow down where I fumble. So instead of the whole filing cabinet, I'm going to the right drawer. Who knows? Some of this might get me to the right file but I see now the advantages of going to the right document immediately but maybe I miss an opportunity on the way.
My music doesn't have to please anyone but me.

Great video Jef! QUESTION: at 14:33 why does Cubase remove the 7 from the notation after you add the slash bass note?
