A searing, emotionally dark and introspective electronic track about feeling way too deep in a situation…like we are all in the world over right now.

I wrote this song with 🦖Xai🦖 about this time last year when lockdown was kinda gonna start happening here in Tokyo. One year later and we are now very, very deep…right? She had an idea for the title “Deep.” Which sounded like “Sleep.” Which was our last single together. It meant the next song we do would likely have to be called “Keep.” Or “Bleep.” To keep with the pattern… 🎧 🎤

As I was playing with the chorus, the words “way too deep” seemed to fit really well, and so that’s what we made the title. I REALLY like this, because you can interpret it as positive or negative. You are so happily madly in love: you are way too deep. Or, you are way too deep inside this hole, and there’s no way out that you can see.

I asked 🦖Xai🦖 which version she identified with when she first heard the title. She instantly said positive. Interesting! Because, I veered towards negative. As the song shaped itself, to me it called for the melancholic. The world felt like it was going to get tough in a way I maybe had not seen before, and it felt right to want to process that. And Xai's voice fits that sooooo well.

BONUS FACTOID: did you know that in Japanese "xai" being pronounced "sai" means rhino?
so, 🦖Xai🦖 should really be spelt 🦏Xai🦏.

The chorus starts with “It’s pain like heaven, a joy like hell” (full lyric sheet below). This is a sad sad sad sad, sad song. 💙💙💙

Sometimes we need a sad song to help us understand our sadness, and as long as there is hope somewhere in the song, like a rope pulling you up out of the deep, it's gonna be OK.

We have an idea to write this track in Japanese as the positive version. Maybe in the summer, when we all have summer dreams back. Maybe.
