Foraging giant wild chanterelle mushrooms in Oregon | Superabundant

This summer marks the 25th anniversary of the Pacific golden chanterelle’s designation as Oregon’s official state mushroom. OPB’s "Superabundant" team heads out to the woods to search for this iconic Oregon fungal treasure.

Chanterelles are special — golden chalices smiling through the black duff, waiting to be kissed with heat, butter and thyme. But as with most things we humans find special, chanterelles require a bit of effort.

Just want to say that Chanterelles grow all over here in Pennsylvania and Maryland and we have no Douglas fir forests. Oddly enough one of my favorite places that sprouts millions of chanterelles is a graveyard with no trees in close proximity. Also the ones here, while not nearly as big as yours, have a super strong smell just like apricots when you cook them. Super delicious.

I used to hunt for these as a kid until the logging company decided to gate many of the roads into the coast hills.

I live on 18 acres in Vernonia, Oregon. These gems grow in my backyard. I love mine cooked in butter and garlic. I do not stop the heat in the pan until they are crispy. When done.... I just put a jag of toothpicks by the pan. We munch on them each trip by that stove and look only one pan to wash! Remember if you are picking on private property ask to pick and carry a note stating permission while you are picking. The mushroom police will see every you every so often. Another favorite are the chicken of the sea, pretty and yummy as well. Oh yep Morrels oh yes
and we even find Hunting!!!!

We have our paring knife and new soft bristled taped together. This allows us to cut the mushroom with the knife then flip over using the sot brush to clean as you go. By the time we et back to the house. They are ready to sauted in that bubbly butter!!! This is one of Gods candy!!!!yummy. Ps We have chanterelles after the rain starts in the fall till the first freeze.

Chanterelles are all around, in every direction, out here in the Oregon Coast Range, Siuslaw National Forest. As are the commercial pickers. I prefer the rarer white variety.
