'Is that clear, Liam?'

Simply said, it's like if you connect multimeter to circuit, write down all values it shows into table and then make graph. Oscilloscope makes exactly this, but it's much faster and simpler to use.

the most clear explanation of Oscilloscope of ever I have seen ... /// HUGE THANKS

My favorite part was the frantic search for the oscilloscope probe.

They're also useful for old analog audio stuff, too. Comparing in/out signals for filters n stuff.

"Displays the current input voltage"

You can see how that can be confusing.

Basically an heartbeat monitor for electronics.

This power supply knob can only change the voltage in relatively big steps! You can see it on the scope around 5:30.

Clueless now, half an engineer in three weeks. That kid is the lucky one. :oD

I would love it if you did an osciloscopes basic series, been struggling to find one.

Thank you so much for the clear and concise explanation of the basics!

Great video for someone like me who watches the channel for the teardowns but doesn't know much about electronics. A follow up video with slightly more practical examples would be great.

I was expecting to hear David 2 voice when I saw the title lol.

Dear Dave, I would like to know a Comparison of the Key-sight and Siglent oscilloscope Bang per buck situation what is worth getting from the consumer grade 2 or 4 Chanel oscilloscopes you reviewed few months ago during scope math and what not ... or should i go for a start with a USB type of Oscilloscope(is that even worth the time effort and money ?) ? " i know you are busy but I think is a legitimate question from a guy how has first hand experience ... Thank you for your time :)

isn't this your second "what is an oscilloscope" video?

Great Tektronix scope. Same model I have and still use it for troubleshooting. None of this new digitial scope rubbish required :)

It sounds stupid but the analogy oscilloscope are always what put me off electronics when we'd get shown any in school or college. They always looked old fashioned to me and never really understood what they were for. However, the digital ones looks so much more interesting and makes me now want one.

Dave how do you like the Siglent SDS1102-X compared to the Rigol DS1054Z?

I was trying to figure out how to contact you. I hope this forum is ok. I am searching for a Hitachi V1050F Operators manual. I have the service manual. Every link I find to the Operators manual seems to be either dead or a false linh going to a hidden advertisement. Can anyone provide a link to current download link and hopefully free? Thank you.

This video would also fit into main EEVblog channel. I know 99.9% of the people there know what an oscilloscope is, even i know what it is but it's very interesting to watch these kind of videos. In this case the video is not be about something i don't know but about how i would explain these things to people who ask me these questions. Teaching is important but it is much harder than it seems. It's difficult to find a way to make something that appears simple to me appear simple to someone else. That's why i find videos such as these very important, they give you some way to teach other people by explaining it like you did in the video or just have an place to send the person asking these questions.

I'm not even remotely hinting that you explained something wrong but while watching this video i felt like you tried to explain a bit too much in too short time, making it a bit hard to follow. I felt it would have been a bit better if you explained it a bit differently (i'm only guessing that the person asking knew nothing beyond multimeters) I once watched video that explained the same thing but it felt much easier to follow. (sadly i have forgotten the author) The idea behind was that the guy showed what a multimeter was like you did by measuring constant voltage, then started "sawing" with the voltage knob on the power supply noting that the multimeter was not fast enough to see the changing voltage clearly and one would need an extra equipment to make it easy to see whats happening while turning the know. It's not far off from what you were showing but he concentrated on a multimeter for a longer time to explain why would one need such a thing before showing what this fancy piece of tech can do.
