The Incholm New Music Ensemble performed on the ground floor of the ruined castle of Noltland, located on the Isle of Westray, the second largest of the North Isles. Noltland was built in the second half of the 16th century by Gilbert Balfour, a man who was fiercely loyal to Mary Queen of Scots.
We went on to perform at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, where this recording was made. A statue of John Knox stands at the entrance of the cathedral, a bitter foe to both Mary Queen of Scots and her cousin Queen Elisabeth the First. I end my slideshow with an angel, a reminder that all such feuds eventually end.
We are singing a 14th century Celtic Plainchant from the Inchcolm Antiphoner.
The INME was founded by Dr. Steve King, Director of Music at Heriot Watt University.
