Debut single of former All Angels choir member Laura Wright, released on the 25th July 2011

The lyrics originate from an Irish poem written by Thomas Moore in 1805:

"'Tis the last rose of summer
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone;
No flower of her kindred,
No rosebud is nigh,
To reflect back her blushes,
To give sigh for sigh.

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one!
To pine on the stem;
Since the lovely are sleeping,
Go, sleep thou with them.
Thus kindly I scatter,
Thy leaves o'er the bed,
Where thy mates of the garden
Lie scentless and dead.

So soon may I follow,
When friendships decay,
From Love's shining circle
The gems drop away.
When true hearts lie withered
And fond ones are flown,
Oh! who would inhabit,
This bleak world alone?"

The song that plays in the last day of bell rings as a ray of sun enters through the curtains and windows....you look up as happiness overcomes you....you stand up, walk to the exits....you push the doors open....the sun shines on your face as you look up, your eyes glistening with unshed tears....which soon begin to fall like soft drops of rain....a laugh escapes your tear stained lips as you feel the warmth....of the outside....The cold of the classroom behind you....you take a few steps forward....the first steps for the rest of your life.

This is a new world now.

Now you are free.

_A story for all high school graduates...._ (must be read with the music as soon as she starts to sing)

This the last of summer
Left blooming alone
All her lovely companions are faded and gone
No flow'r oh her kindred
No rosebud is nigh
I'll not leave thee thou lone one
To pine on the stem
Since the lovely are sleeping
Go sleep thou with them
Thus kindly i scatter
Thy leaves o'er the bed
Where thy mates of the garden
Lie senseless and dead
So soon may i follow
When friends ships decay
And from love's shining circle
The gems drop away
When true hearts lie wither'd
And fond one are flown
Oh who would inhabit
This bleak world alone

I'm glad the singer Laura Wright doesn't skip the second verse, which I never know why is quite often omitted, but includes the striking last line "Where their mates of the garden lie scentless and dead", which  for clarity's sake perhaps was divided into two lines by the 19th-century poet & composer Thomas Moore, the first publisher of this admittedly most famous Irish folk song.🎶

RWBY sent me. In the story, the main character's mother is named Summer Rose. She has passed away before the series begins, and on her grave it says "Thus kindly I scatter". I looked up the phrase, found the origin and lead me here. Wonderful singing here =)

I heard Laura first on Classic FM, a popular radio station in the UK for classical music. I sent her a Twitter message saying I just heard a voice that sounds like Enya on LOTR! She said "Thank you!". This was the song, and I love it.

Know this song from the movie Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri. What a beautiful song! I have tears in my eyes everytime I listen to this song.

I wrote a story called The Last Rose, and this song featured and inspired it. Thank you :)

Really nice voice and collection of songs.
I also like the picture of the English summer countryside in the background. It makes me want to get away from the concrete city and just relax and enjoy listerning to her voice in the fields of the countryside. Music for an summers afternoon.

I like the rhythm she uses, most others use a more irregular or dotted rhythm that changes from verse to verse. She sings it so clearly and simply.

The nicest version of this that I've found on You Tube, very warm and natural, with beautiful orchestration.

This is such a beautiful wistful song. I've always loved it and I thouoght of it on the laast day of August; sad good-bye to the joys of summer, as the darkness increases and light fades from the sky more and more each day.
