DipIt #18: Faux Stained Glass

You asked me to try some faux Stained glass with epoxy, so I did! I ended up using my Carvey CNC for the wood cut out but it could easily be done with a scroll saw as well.

I'm super pleased with the results! Let me know what you think.

Oh wow, the black light really made that *pop*. Nice one!

The fluorescent, responsive, butterfly would make an awesome black light box lamp. Kinda like a kids nightlight.
Put black light LEDs in the base, 4 panels of butterflies, and a solid top.

Hey Peter, you could drastically reduce your cnc cutting times by spending a bit more time editing the picture before you use it. What I mean by that is instead of cutting away the entire blank sections, you would cut around the edges (much like a scroll saw).
For the butterfly in this video, many free programs and online editors offer to flip the colours around with the click of a button. For reducing cutting times like I said, you would have to trace around the inside of the cutouts slightly bigger than the cutting tool you're using, doesn't have to be exact either. I hope this is some use to you :)

Oh something worth mentioning, if you do decide to try this, the cutout pieces will no longer be supported and could mess up your part or ping around inside the machine.. To combat this just put some strong tape on the backside of the piece or alternatively, leave "tabs" where your cnc machine won't cut by joining the cutaway pieces to the main clamped piece (when editing the image).

When you first uploaded the butterfly image to easel couldn’t you have just pushed the ‘invert’ button before importing?

These are great. Really like that last butterfly. Feel like you could use this technique to decorate larger pieces of furniture etc.

I love that you thought to look at these under black light!! More than once I've seen a YouTube maker create something that would look awesome under black light, but you're the first one I've seen who actually showed it!

They turned out beautifully! I actually work with stained glass, and I've been mulling over the idea of trying stained resin. This was definitely inspiring.

It's just a giant version of an open back bezel or metal frame settings for jewelry! Love it!😍

Cool! You can also buy various wooden shapes similar to the butterfly at most craft stores.

Hi! My friends an I love to watch your videos, its very serious within our group when a new video comes out. Unfortunately, this one doesn't have any captions and some of us need them to be able to watch. Is there any way you could add some? Thank you!
