Phil shows us round his workplace at 8 Canada Square, the international headquarters of HSBC. Find out what makes this modern building so special and discover the view from the top.

I worked night shift as maintenance electrician during construction and when it was fully opened. Loved this place, I remember it snowing once while I was on top of building. Looking out across the city-lights at night and programming the dalmatic lighting system to set lights to turn off/on at certain floor at different times to save power. The stairs kept you fit going up or down floors. I think it had two canteens and had its own pizza oven. Snacks and coffee vending machines on each floor and hot Choclate. This Maintenace team was made of Aussies, Kiwi & British.

My son works there. He works really hard. He’s been there since leaving university. Contrary to a lot of people’s opinion about bankers he’s scrupulously honest and is really popular with his clients.

I worked there for 7 years and have a few stories to tell.
Once we had a fire on the floor below us; we were on 33 and weren’t supposed to use the lifts to escape but after 15 flights my knees hurt and chanced the lift to make our exit.
Floor 7 didn’t exist on the main lift elevator buttons, but it could be reached by other means, I’m not sure I should say what’s on that floor!
The reception staff were top class, they’d remember me even though thousands worked there.
Most bankers there worked from 8am to 5 pm but I’d work until 9pm most nights and when it was all quiet I'd popup to the very top floor to take in the views which were stunning, especially late at night.
One New Years Eve at 11pm I was making some system uploads, ready for the New Year, and I had the whole building to myself.
It was very spooky especially as the lights and PC screens automatically go out after 20 minutes of inactivity.
I had a great time working for HSBC.

If you look closely from the observation deck you can see the 'narco money' arriving. Nobody does the laundry better, than HSBC.

I remember when the HSBC HQ at 99 Bishopsgate, on 1993 April 24, was remodelled by a couple of Irish lads obviously upset with HSBC service. They did a good job of site clearance.

And now HSBC have announced they are to vacate the building within the next few years.
