The Mystery Behind The Atari Mirai

The Atari Mirai is one of the strangest cases of an unfinished console ever, and has left the gaming industry with questions ever since it was found in 1996. With just a shell, it is nearly impossible to figure out what this console had in store, except for maybe tonight...

The Jaguar was actually released in 1993. Also, it wasn't a true 64-bit system. It was a 32-bit system, but they did some creative math with the processors that technically made it "64-bit".

Atari branding, with neo geo games, and a good price? Talk about an unbeatable combo lol

This is incredible. I knew nothing about this and this was genuinely entertaining.

The Panther was based on the ST line and had basically upgraded graphics and sound. It also had a relatively large cartridge slot which could roughly fit and the Panther was supposed to be a successor for the XEGS, which features said pastell design.

This mystery has already been solved, the Mirai is the prototype shell for the 16-bit Atari Super XE Games System, it's been covered really well on the Laird's Lair You Tube channel.

Is there a way to contact employees who worked around the time of this console? Maybe ask those people what this console was supposed to be

It’s so eerie that it’s called “Atari Mirai”, meaning “Future”. It’s almost as if it’s meant to make a surprise comeback sometime in the future.

Okay: 1st. The Atari 2600 came 5 years after Atari's first release of Pong in arcades (1972) with home Pong coming in 1975; 2nd. The Intellivision came out 2 years after the 2600 in '79 and the Colecovision came out in 1982, which is the primary reason for the increased power versus the 2600 (much like how the n64 was considerably weaker than the Dreamcast because of a 2 year gap in release), and while a bit nitpicky, the time gap between initial releases should have been mentioned rather than just calling them concurrent; 3rd. The Lynx was actually developed by Epyx (the company behind games like California Games and Winter Games), and was originally dubbed the "Handy", but through some financial issues and Jack Tremiel's usual assholery, Atari ended up owning the rights to it and screwing everyone else over.

I believe the Game Brain was just an accessory - think of it as a 6 disc CD changer, but for Atari 2600
carts. I pretty sure it was released, I remember watching one on eBay cuz I thought it was really cool.

EDIT: Well, we re both right. The pic shown is what I was talking about, but there is an unreleased Atari Game Brain system.

Woah, now we're talking mysterious here! I can wonder if this would've led to the Jaguar never being released.

Just had a quick suggestion! I know it seem inconsequential, but maybe put your "Like and subscribe" line at the beginning of the video, or somewhere in the middle? I've heard this helps to get a slight boost in engagement. Hope the channel gets much bigger my man!

Could the "cartridge slot" be a tray for printer paper? Assuming it was an attachment for something typing / computer related maybe it was something that used a printer or a typewriter and that was the tray the paper sat in or came out of, maybe it had a fax option? I think the Gameboy also had some add ons that could have it be used as a personal computer

Just because it has. Big cartridge doesnt debunk the 16 bit theory, nes cartridges are double the size of famcom cartridges. They could have just wanted to make the cartridges look like snk ones
