Did water exist before creation?

I understand the question. The beginning of Genesis says God created the heavens and the earth and then mentions the Spirit hovering over the waters, and then the detailed creation account. This is called 'General to Specific' description and happens often in the Bible. The statement before the detailed creation account is not false or even chronological but strictly descriptive. So God did something and then a closer look at what happened. The word water is also considered metaphoric to anything without structure. Many view this as stating that existence was nothing until God made that first something which was without structure and then God fashioned the universe into something good over the following 6 days. What is says is he separated the water from above and below. Creating the firmament. The waters on the Earth was then separate from the land creating solid ground. In the book of Genesis people overlook sometimes the difference in the separation and evidence of the firmament separating the heaven and Earth. You also see the Firmament open up to create the great flood so water could flow. Before the flood, no mention of rain. Water came from below.

This dude's answer is incorrect. The bible says it separated the waters above from the waters below. Not that it separated the continental land from the water. How did he divide the waters? With a dome. Above the dome where the lights we call stars are, there is water. Stars are sono-luminescence. They are made by the vibration of a sound wave going through water.

I am bothered by the number of people in the comment section that are speaking negatively about this young lady and calling her hostile because of her shirt. What if she had not planned to go hear frank turek that day? What if the Spirit of God compelled her to pop in an learn as she was passing by? What if she actually is not hostile? What is she is actually interested to know more about Christian? After all, she started her question by say "I was wondering if I am misinterpreting genesis..." Are we being good examples of what God expects from his followers when we speak negatively about those who are seeking to know him? God works on people from the inside out, not from the outside in. What if he is still working on her heart? 🤔 Just a thought... I pray that we Christians would continue to seek God for wisdom on how to deal with the lost and broken. I pray that we would not dismiss those who ask questions about the God who saved us simply because we don't like how they look or dress. 🙏

I believe her question comes from Genesis 1:2. Is it because God didn’t add that I first made the waters of the deep and then my spirit moves over the water. Or was the water already there.

it's more complicated... the hebrew word for "heavens" is "shamayim" and for waters "mayim". These words are linked, waters and heavens are something like same substance

(Genesis 1:1) "In the BEGINNING God created the heavens and the earth." Water isn't MENTIONED until later on. There's no reason to suppose water existed BEFORE the universe. That was an interesting question though, there are no words describing the individual creation of water, but a creation of the earth with water on it.

Then Genesis 1:1-2:1-3 is the complete story of Genesis 1 really, I don't know why they separate it by another chapter.
