The second single from ‘The Circus’ album ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be’ was released in February 1987 and reached number 12 in the UK charts.
The single b-side featured an electronic interpretation of the classical piece, Grieg’s ‘In The Hall Of The Mountain King’

The video was directed by Gerard De Thame, who also produced pop promos for Lloyd Cole, Black, Tinita Tikaram and The Damned.

This wakes memories... A hot summer's day in 1992. A road trip from Stockholm to Öland - about 260 miles - with my boyfriend at that time and my maternal grandparents. Grandma in the front seat is annoyed: She doesn't like the music on the radio. I give her my CD with Erasure. My boyfriend puts it in the CD-player, some songs are played. And then this song comes...
Grandma is silent, doesn't say a word (unusual for her). When the song is over, she says: "That was one of the greatest songs I've ever heard!" (Grandpa whispered to me: "She was silent all through the song. Can we play it again?")
Sadly, she passed away a few years after that, and Grandpa 13 years ago. But every time I listen to this song, I remember my dear, loving grandparents....
