As a BMW owner and lover. We have really gone downhill and should stick to wagons, sedans and coupes. All of our SUVs are ugly. We have had ugly cars too. Every manufacturer has had ugly cars. It sucks but the way it is. No one is perfect and you just have to point out the mistakes that have been made instead of defending them 24/7. sometimes it is our fault and you just need to go with it.

Huge BMW fangirl here, all German cars really. As a diehard BMWFG I have to say you are absolutely correct. BMW has a weird habit of throwing out hideous cars every few years, imho.

the E36 compact is underrated, especially in its highest spec i4 and i6

it drives like a go-kart, is insanely reliable and it has decent parts availability.

while the E46 compact is an eye sore, there is a mod to fit non compact E46 front lights, making it look so much less goofy.

Hot take: SUV coupes are fine as long as they have as much style as substance, like a coupe version of the first gen porsche cayanne (they were designed and proven to be off road capable) or a pickup with a saloon like body (a F150 raptor with a mach-e body would be nice)

Dude BMW seriously needs to figure their shit out, it feels like someone is deliberately trying to subvert the legacy of the brand.

BMW’s all throughout the 2010’s were absolutely beautiful, one could say the design language peaked back then, but I find it hard that a multi-billion dollar company cant amass its resources to come up with something better, or even just logically iterative.

In defence of compact, they are fun to drive, they are relatively light weight (if you do some lighting and remove all the carpets, old seats and sound dampening), short and have 50/50 weight balance. In easter europe you will not even find one because all of them get converted in to rally cars. Even some of them get cut in half, welded to a e46 front and tuned to have naturally aspirated +500hp engines with awd drive rally cars, you can look up “samsonas” for a onboard of one of these cars. They might look ugly but they serve there porpoise
