Gravitational Lensing, The Furthest Galaxies, Light, Electrons, and Life in the Universe | ASMR

Tonight is a look across the Universe. We begin with the first ever gravitational lensed galaxy found in the 1980's in the galaxy cluster, Abell 370 to another Hubble Deep Field and the size and characteristics of the Universe at the largest scales.

Then we go down to the subatomic and see how light interacts with matter and how all electrons are possibly just one single electron moving back and forth through time and space. (that one is seriously fascinating).

Last we discuss the possibility of life in the universe using the parameters outlined by the Drake equation. This uses probabilities about stars, exoplanets, life, civilizations, and their technologies to estimate how many other intelligent living and extinct civilizations there might be in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Great video!! And 1:44:14 is so true. It’s crazy how we shove ourselves into such a teeny tiny box when overcome with stress, pressure, anxiety, fear, etc. We forget that these things are so small compared to the entirety of the universe. It’s refreshing to remember that in the scope of everything, there is so much more to our lives than what we have limited them to.

You are THE most calming person on YouTube if not the known universe! And very knowledgeable too.
Best wishes from the uk

I love these types of videos because it’s like the asmr I would get as a child listening and kind of following other folk’s conversations and slowly falling asleep! It is also appreciated when you label them whispering or conversational so I can select the type I may be interested in experiencing!

*The Dragon Arc: A Mirage from the Early Universe*

This section describes the discovery and significance of the Dragon Arc, a gravitationally lensed galaxy behind the Abell 370 galaxy cluster.

* 0:07: Astronomers discovered a curious arc near the Abell 370 galaxy cluster in the mid-1980s.
* 0:58: The arc, later named the Dragon Arc, gained importance in astrophysics and cosmology.
* 1:04: The Hubble Space Telescope resolved the Dragon Arc as a single background spiral galaxy magnified and focused by the Abell 370 cluster's gravity.
* 1:38: The Dragon Arc's body and tail were identified as duplicate images of the same distant spiral galaxy.
* 2:48: The Abell 370 cluster was found to be over 5 billion light-years away.
* 3:08: The Dragon Arc was measured to be much further away than the Abell 370 cluster, at a redshift of 7.24, meaning it is a mirage from a much earlier era of the universe.

*Hubble's Deep Dive into Abell 370*

This section details the Hubble Space Telescope's observations of the Abell 370 galaxy cluster and the insights it provided.

* 4:06: In 2014, Hubble observed Abell 370 as part of the Frontier Fields Program, capturing unprecedented detail of the cluster.
* 4:48: The observation revealed various types of galaxies within the cluster, including massive elliptical galaxies and spiral galaxies similar to our Milky Way.
* 5:41: Hubble resolved faint features, showcasing the cluster's gravitational influence warping spacetime and creating streaks and arcs from the light of background galaxies.
* 6:34: The observation identified numerous blue arcs, each representing a distant galaxy behind the cluster, many with duplicates due to the lensing effect.
* 7:04: Abell 370's elongated objects provided information about the cluster's gravitational potential, allowing astronomers to map its dark matter distribution.
* 7:57: The cluster was found to contain two large clumps of dark matter, suggesting it formed from the merger of two smaller clusters.
* 8:25: Hubble also observed "parallel fields" near the cluster, providing a deep look into the early Universe without the lensing effect.

*Exploring the Depths of the Universe*

This section delves into the speaker's reflections on the vastness of the universe, the mysteries of dark matter, and the possibility of life beyond Earth.

* 10:53: The speaker marvels at the Hubble Deep Field images, showcasing galaxies billions of light-years away.
* 12:45: The speaker contemplates the possibility of life existing in other galaxies, pondering their stage of evolution.
* 21:30: The speaker discusses the significance of infrared light in observing distant galaxies, as younger galaxies emit more infrared light due to active star formation.
* 1:32:06: The speaker introduces the Drake Equation, a tool for estimating the probability of finding intelligent life in the universe.
* 1:41:48: The speaker explores the concept of a closed universe, where the universe curves back on itself, potentially allowing us to see our own galaxy in its early stages.

*The One-Electron Universe and the Interconnectedness of Everything*

This section explores the fascinating theory of the one-electron universe and its implications for our understanding of reality.

* 46:01: The speaker discusses the theory proposed by John Wheeler and Richard Feynman, suggesting that all electrons and positrons are manifestations of a single entity moving backward and forward in time.
* 49:14: The theory is based on the concept of world lines, which trace the trajectories of electrons through spacetime.
* 49:56: Wheeler proposed that these world lines could be part of a single, tangled line traced by one electron, with backward sections appearing as positrons.
* 53:11: Feynman acknowledged the brilliance of this idea and later incorporated the concept of positrons as electrons moving backward in time into his own work.
* 54:32: The speaker marvels at the idea that the creation and annihilation of particle-antiparticle pairs might simply be a change in the direction of movement through time.

*The Nature of Light and Its Impact on Our World*

This section delves into the properties of light across the electromagnetic spectrum and its role in various scientific phenomena.

* 55:22: The speaker explains the concept of the electromagnetic spectrum, ranging from radio waves to gamma rays, and how different wavelengths of light carry different energies.
* 59:43: The speaker describes how the energy of light interacts with electrons in materials like gold, demonstrating the photoelectric effect.
* 1:06:08: The speaker emphasizes that the energy of a photon, not the intensity of light, determines its ability to eject electrons and create a current.
* 1:13:33: The speaker briefly touches upon Einstein's theories of relativity and how they relate to the behavior of light and the distortion of spacetime.
* 1:24:15: The speaker mentions the concept of radiation pressure, which can be used to propel objects through space using light, as planned in the Breakthrough Starshot project.

*The Role of Dark Matter in the Formation of Galaxies*

This section focuses on the mysterious nature of dark matter and its crucial role in the structure and evolution of the universe.

* 1:21:36: The speaker describes the concept of dark matter, an invisible substance that interacts gravitationally with ordinary matter but does not emit or absorb light.
* 1:26:20: The speaker explains how dark matter played a critical role in the early universe by providing a framework for galaxy formation.
* 1:28:44: Unlike ordinary matter, dark matter was unaffected by radiation pressure in the early universe, allowing it to collapse and form dense regions that attracted ordinary matter, leading to the birth of galaxies.
* 1:31:00: The speaker draws a comparison between the web-like structure of dark matter filaments and the network of neurons in the human brain, hinting at the possibility of deeper connections in the universe.

*Conclusion: A Universe of Wonder and Mystery*

This section reflects on the profound implications of our expanding knowledge of the universe and the enduring quest for understanding.

* 1:44:09: The speaker encourages viewers to find solace and perspective in the vastness of the universe and the ongoing pursuit of knowledge.
* 1:44:38: The speaker emphasizes the collaborative nature of scientific discovery, where each generation builds upon the knowledge of the past.
* 1:45:11: The speaker expresses hope for a future where knowledge is gained with humility and shared openly, fostering a deeper understanding of our place in the cosmos.

I saw a couple comments talk about it but one of my greatest methods of actually relaxing and realizing whatever “major” issue I’m stressing about is really not a big deal is to take a metaphoric step back. Zoom out and think about how small we really are. For some it may freak them out but for me it’s really humbling and helps me reset and figure things out.
Great video, as always, Rich!
