Hand Dug Pond - 4 - Nearly there (in one area...)

Показать описание
The larger hand dug pond project is moving along, and I've realized I need to focus the efforts to one area to be able to get a portion finalized before later fall/winter. The other areas can be as-is for now and we can pick up on them next year...

Edible Acres is a full service permaculture nursery located in the Finger Lakes area of NY state. We grow all layers of perennial food forest systems and provide super hardy, edible, useful, medicinal, easy to propagate, perennial plants for sale locally or for shipping around the country…
Happy growing!

pace yourself and dig deeper. take a day of rest and then hit it again. i worked on a extra hard project this past winter and spring. it was rough. so i limited myself to a small amount at a time and before i knew it i was finished and doing so it didnt feel like such a huge thing to do. also look at this time as a blessing to have it dry enough to get it dug out completely before rains return or a return to 'normal patterns' and you cant dig in that spot for possibly years? just a thought. keep up the good work, steady as she goes !

I don't know if they do this in your area but a resource for helping with the digging might be high schoolers and middle schoolers getting their community hours. It's a great way for the kids to learn a skill or about the small businesses/people in their town and you can get a lot of body hours done in less time. Lots of hands make light work.

Thank you for posting this- you've inspired me to work more on the small pond I started last year. Realizing that I can take smaller steps to reach my eventual goal. It's too easy to procrastinate when you're looking at a huge project.

Little kids think they can grab a shovel and dig a swimming pool. You’re proving it’s possible! 👍🏻

captions should have been "i was going to buy a bowflex, but then i decided hand-dig a pond" lol

This is awesome. I thought we were the only ones crazy enough to hand-dig ponds. You are way ahead of us though.

Looking forward for your videos when it’s filled with water 😁 We’re dry in northern Illinois too.

You could maybe get some pigs in to work the clay when it's time to seal the pond. I think it's called gleying - there are discussions about it on permies.com. Great work though!

I have never heard of using a partial liner in a pond. My instincts would be this is a futile idea. Water surely would migrate under the liner and cause bubbles. Your idea of using the clay for sealing is a better plan.

A lot of hard work. It will be great when you get it done. Don't hurt your body slow and steady. 🌟

Something that may help with retaining some extra water next summer while helping irrigation is a bank of floating of units. The shade cast on the water will help with evaporation and produce the power needed to fill your big tanks. Even keep a battery topped up that runs some lighting along the path ways for safety.

That shelf looks like good place to grow some water lotus plants to clean the water.
