I think a lot of it is mental game, when i started playing tournaments i didn't get any final tables for six months (even online that's probably just part of the variance), however after i placed in 3rd i won two tournaments out of 3k players within a week. Also i started regularly winning the 180 person ones.

The structures are less top-heavy than when I first played live, twenty-odd years ago, but continue to reward playing for the win over survival. There are exceptions, though.

The year before last, I was playing a 2500 at the WSOP. There was one pro at the table and we had been there all day, were nearing the money, yet not quite on the bubble.

Another pro, sitting between us, commented on how this player had gone into a shell after losing a large pot to me, and was now on a shorter stack. The first pro as much as said, 'I'm only playing QQ+ and AK'.

With 4k on the line for a min cash and little chance of winning, he thought it best. Matter of fact, he did bust on the first level of day two after locking up the dough.
