Nomenclature: Crash Course Chemistry #44

Ever feel like there's an international team of bad guys changing all of the easily remembered chemical names and turning them into test-failing, number-infused, pain-in-the-neck names? Well... you're not wrong. IUPAC exists, but try to keep in mind that they're doing it for the greater good. In this episode, Hank talks about IUPAC, prefixes, suffixes, ranking, numbers for carbon chains, and cis or trans double bonds.

Pssst... we made flashcards to help you review the content in this episode! Find them on the free Crash Course App!

I thought I was confused and not able to understand this stuff, then I watched this video, now I KNOW I am confused and unable to understand this material.

Nomenclature was always my favorite in organic chem. Even when I was failing the class, I always did well on nomenclature.

7:26 - tell that to my chemistry teacher, back when I was in highschool.

I think so many students find these videos, and similar youtube videos so helpful is because you have already learnt this in class. Hearing it for the first time is always so much more confusing, but having it solidified in a different format and with a different perspective makes all the difference.

This is mainly because I'm trying to study chemistry on my own (screw you GAMSAT), and watching CrashCourse when trying to learn a new topic for the first time, I find I actually learn very little.

So, whilst CrashCourse is a great resource to catch your interest in the sciences, or as a quick refresher for students, it is pretty bad for people learning it the first time. So if you're having a lot of trouble learning, its not you. Keep studying, and it'll make sense soon enough :)

Totally mind boggling way of explaining!! You've just showed something worth living to and understanding so deep in the curious that you can never imaging. Stay blessed n continue the amazing work!!

I've been watching CrashCourse forever now, and I just realized something awesome. The animations are very similar to the animation cutscenes used in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

nice

In case anyone was wondering about the exact precedence of the functional groups listed in this video (ranked in decreasing priority):

#1 Carboxylic Acid
#2 Esters
#3 Aldehydes
#4 Ketones
#5 Alcohols
#6 Amines

"You don't have to memorise this!"

Tell that to my Organic Chemistry lecturer and my unit coordinator... :(

Standardisation, it's a pain in the ass. But it's just that kind of pain in the ass that actually saves your life. Just like a prostate exam.

Wait what.

Another awesome lecture. I'll try to remember this when i need to look it up again.

Thanks.

I kind of love your right now. You made more sense in this video than my chem teacher did in a week of learning this. He is horrible at explaining! Thank you so so so much! (seriously, I'm on the verge of tears right now because this has been the longest day, and not understanding chemistry has been the icing on top of the evil monster cupcake. Thank you)

Thank you so much! this helps me understand more of organic chemistry. I've learned about Trans and Cis before my class teacher explain to us. Now, I feel like a nerd haha

It would be so useful if Youtube gave us a 0.75 speed.
