Lyrics

1. Every winter you will notice that the birdies in the sky
To the south will always fly, now perhaps you’re wondering why
It’s a land of sunshine and the only place a real wise bird should be
There’s a lot of good things waiting there for you and me

Chorus:
Just to make our clothes the cotton grows in dear old Alabam
Each hungry mouth looks to the South for sweet Virginia ham
From Tennessee comes melody that’s played by ev’ry band
And if you’re talking of chicken, Oh, Maryland!
Louisiana sugar is sweeter than the rose
Just thank old Carolina, that’s where the Bull Durham grows
If you’re dreaming of a girl to love, that’s the place to win her hand
Take my advice, Anything is nice, if it comes from Dixie land

2. Dixie, Dixie is a garden far away from snow and ice
It’s a perfect paradise and the home of everything nice
Everybody loves it ’cause they know about it’s many different charms
Like a mother she will welcome you with open arms

This is played two times faster than it should be. I have this same sheet music that belonged to my grandmother. She played piano in a silent movie house when she was a teenager in Florence, Alabama. She played this for me years ago. W. C. Handy and his band played at her high school prom. Grandmommy, as we called her (Vesta Isabel Smith Coleman) graduated from college at age 17. Her husband, (my grandfather) on the other hand only had a fifth grade education. He was twelve years older than her. He built several skyscrapers and homes in Dallas, Texas. I got all of Grandmommy’s old sheet music when she passed. If you’ll notice, the music tells you that it’s not to be played fast.
