The Weddell Sea in Antarctica is the coldest on the planet, yet it's home to an extraordinary ecosystem boasting an estimated 14,000 species from killer whales to starfish.

Now, there's a proposal to turn these rich waters into the largest wildlife sanctuary on Earth.

In part one of Al Jazeera's series on the Weddell Sea, Environment Editor Nick Clark joined a Greenpeace expedition vessel making its way to the site of the sanctuary.
