Jeran Escapes the Flat Earth

The major news in the debunking/science education community this week is that Jeran of Jeranism has officially left the flat earth and recognized the observations he made in Antarctica are consistent with a Globe Earth.

He has been busy removing flat earth content from his channel and laid into the toxic Flat Earth Community during a livestream Friday night.

Here are my thoughts on this major development....

Let's clarify something. What I am recommending is that we don't consider the information is wrong, simply because it is from the government, experts or teachers. That is not the default position. That is what I am referring to concerning trusting these groups. All groups have a few incompetent people, every group at times is deceptive. The default is they have integrity and offer correct, validated information, especially for basic high school earth science level issues. Before claiming it is a lie, you have to have evidence that leads you to that specific conclusion concerning that specific information.

Not only did he see the light, he saw it for 24 hours a day.

One of the few fe's who did what they all say they will do. He asked for evidence, he got it, and re evaluated his view based on the evidence. So good for him. I respect that.

I subscribed to Jeranism because of his five-hour livestream. It's not easy to have to re-evaluate your worldview and I wanted to support him. I also commented on his video. The most impressive thing that Jeran did, was to state his predictions before his Antarctic trip and then stick to his position as a result of his observations. Witsit, made no predictions and is now strutting around saying how great it is for the flat earth, firing off his memorised list of logical fallacies (which don't necessarily mean that the observations are false) and boasting about how clever he is.

Doubt is ok, willful ignorance is not.

Dean Odle's whole comment that it was "satan" causing the 24 hour sun is beyond comedic in my opinion.

Just an osbervational statement:
I'd rather not be known as a "Glober", I'd rather be known as "normal"!

I did something today I thought I would never do. I subbed to Jeran's channel. I have never been a fan of his, AT ALL, but as he crawls out of the rabbit hole he fell down he's going to need some support and nurturing to help him along the way. And since flerfs have shown their true colors and have turned their backs on him... well, it feels like an opportunity to bring him, and possibly some others, into our community.

You said exactly what I've been saying. Jeran might have changed his mind on this, but he didn't change his method of figuring out what's true in reality.

I also noticed that he immediately turned around and doubted the moon landing. The irony is that he used the exact same half baked video criticism and sophistry that flat earthers have been using to doubt that Jeran was in Antarctica.

He talks about being open to evidence, but he seems to be asking for some other conspiracy to fill in the space left by flat earth. He's almost begging for someone to tell him that Earth is a ball, but it's still in the center of the universe, so we're special, and he's special because he "knows" that special thing.

Twenty years ago I fell for a conspiracy. I was lucky, I didn't fall in too deep, and it only took one major discrepancy that I spotted to break me out.

If I remember correctly Jeran stated he became a Flat Earther because he had fell into a state of disillusionment with a lot of things he believed in. He found a community(cult) willing to take him in, but always said he wanted truth more than anything. While defending Flat Earth vigorously he seemed more level headed and thoughtful than some of the other hotheads. In other words, he was still wrong, but wasn't a dick about it(Hi Nathan Oakley). He went, he saw truth in his face, and publicly said he was wrong. I respect his courage for doing that, and appreciate his honesty.

He trained his audience to react that way. That's the way he's reacted to anyone else's observations..

The question yet to be answered is: will Jeran abandon the collection of conspiracy theories and paranoia, that led him to FE in the first place? You may rejoice to discover a person who escaped the Moon Cult only to discover they've joined Heaven's Gate because their mental disorder and gullibility wasn't rectified.

Surely all the predictions that the flat earthers made for TFE also came true... I mean, they didn't make any so technically they're on 100%.

I saw that STST reached out to Jeran because he was also the target of a lot of abuse when he left the flat earth community. He wasn't as well-known a proponent, but he is probably in a good position to understand Jeran. I hope they manage to connect.
With Jeran, though, I'm afraid that, as you said, he will just move to the next conspiracy since he sees himself as a "truther".

There's nothing wrong with not trusting the government. I trust them about as far as I can throw them. But I also understand that the world is a messy place, and that, on the whole, individual officials are likely to be well-intentioned, even if they're part of a bureaucracy that's as likely to do harm as good. The problem is: essentialism. Seeing the world in black and whites. Wanting things to be simple so badly that you shut your eyes for the complexities that arise from reality being real.

I think a main "Eureka" moment for Jeran, was Dave sitting down and explaining the equatorial mount and how at the equator, it would aim at the earth below at night. I think at that point, and, with no tracking software, it can only be one path taken.
That, combined with the weight experiments and the 24 hr sun, probably tipped him away from "the edge" so to speak.

You could hear it in his voice during their talk.

Edit. As per request

He'll switch to Moon landing denying full time to keep his revenue going.

I don't know why anti-intellectualism became so fashionable.

I'm not going to give Jeran credit for anything. He spent 10 years calling legitimate scientists liars (with no evidence). He peddled his conspiracies to a target audience of weak minded individuals and made money off it. He should spend the next 10 years apologizing for that.
