I naturally did this in my play. Whenever I found myself with few spoiling bulbs, I'd just make a latern out of it. Eventually I had a little corner of many lanterns that I just put on the ground to save chest storage space.

I try to divide them into 2 sides, one is full, and the other are empty ones. Whenever I find my lanterns are low, I just drop it on empty side and pick up a full lantern.

I'd rather spend like 20 silk and catch a huge amount of fireflies, they don't rot so there's no headache.

Because lightbulbs are so incredibly plentiful, I actually sometimes intentionally let them spoil over a few days in order to easily intentionally make rot. Because I base in caves a lot, this always ensures that I'll be able to have my replanted grass and berry bushes ready to go within a week of setting up, plus I'll have the extra to make Booster Shots if I need to revive early on before I get Life-giving Amulets and Effigies.

Also you can bundle 160 lightbulbs and store it to the chest with the lanterns, when all the lanterns will have 0% of charge just refuel them!
No need in gathering lightbulbs in 5 years!

I do already make a few extra lanterns and miner hats for this exact purpose. Having a dedicated box for them is not a bad idea though, I've just been leaving them on the ground. Which now that I think about it doesn't make much sense, the idea is that I can turn them on if it becomes night if I don't have fuel for my campfire. But I pretty much always have fuel and if I don't, I'm probably carrying a light source on me.

If you don't want to go to caves very often, just catch 20 lightbugs and use them instead of a lantern.

I have a bad habit of only having exactly what I need at any given time, like I'll get a thermal stone or some winter gear and just never craft a backup so sometimes I end up screwing myself by dying far away from my base. If I had nine lanterns at home that would be a pretty good way to ensure I always had a light source

Or if you have the extra mats from tumbleweeding you can change 2 lightbulbs into a fresh lantern, a full stack of bulbs can make you twenty lanterns providing you with roughly 120 days of light.
