Protestant Reviews Jack Chick's Anti-Catholic Tracts

Ever wonder how caricatures become so popular? Publishing tracts that sell 750 MILLION copies is one way. In this video, I break down some of the arguments that Jack Chick makes in one of his most popular tracts, "Are Roman Catholics Christians?" In doing so, I evaluate some bad arguments about Catholicism and touch on ways that we can disagree more charitably to bring people together, rather than driving them apart.

About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a YouTube channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.

“Half truths become whole lies when misapplied.”

That’s great!

I read many Chick tracts growing up. They helped convince me to become a Catholic priest. :)

I came across Chick Publications anti-Catholic tracts when I was Episcopalian. I found them so outrageous I started doing my own research and eventually became Catholic. Soooo thanks Jack.

Literally just said in my last video that the only thing I knew about Catholicism growing up was in Chick Tracts!! Thank you so much for going through these and commenting on it! This is so helpful in the conversation between Protestants and Catholics!

You are one of my favorite Christian YouTube channels! I love that you are not tearing down other Christian churches like other evangelical YouTubers unfortunately do. You respectfully try to understand their point and that is the true way that Christ intended for his church. Unity is so important.

Sending you lots of love from Germany and keep up that good work! God bless you.

Jack Chick's pamphlets are so absurd that I suspect he probably converted more thoughtful people to Roman Catholicism than any RC apologist.

I grew up on chick tracts. So much of my "knowledge" of Catholics was based upon misunderstanding and fear. Now by God's grace I am a Catholic convert. Thanks you for your show and how you try to search for truth and nuance in your videos!

Catholicism is the fullness of the faith. I recently converted. So happy to be Catholic. The Eucharist and rosary are amazing.

I've only seen a couple Chick tracts, but I can't remember any Christian publication so devoid of both charity and sound doctrine.

Chick tracts cracked me up when I was a teenager in the 1980s. Unfortunately, to my mind, they made Christianity seem like a joke 🙁

I don’t understand Low Church Protestant’s misunderstanding of the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus did not say this represents My body and blood, or that it symbolizes it. He said IT IS my body and blood. Orthodox here btw.

I grew up in the 80s when Jack Chick and other tracts abounded. Fortunately, I read lots of history and theology even then and recognized the “half truths” (loved your rhyme) and outright lies. But lots of good people then were misled by them.

Interesting how Chick shows all this hatred and bigotry toward Catholics and other religions as well as other groups...yet he never bothers telling us which denominations (in his eyes) do it right. Just "a church where the (KJV) Bible is preached and is the final authority"...so why does he never give specific examples? I mean he said that Helen is going to hell even though (pre Vatican II especially) the Catholic Church insisted that it was the one true faith as it was founded by Jesus Himself and he appointed St Peter as the first pope. Honestly there is no such thing as a "one truth faith".

That's the main thing I just cannot and will not with a clear conscience accept...that people would burn for eternity just because they didn't believe the right things or say the right magic words...not to mention how could someone be happy in heaven if they have loved ones in hell? I mean, the main overall message from Christ above all else is to help and be compassionate towards your fellow humans. But I guess after death we're supposed to be like Ivan Drago and be all like, "If they burn, they burn."?

I'm originally from Japan and somebody gave me the Chicks tract 30+ years ago. I read the tract to learn English and eventhally I was saved.

When I was growing up, many friends, family, and churches had these tracks. I was ok with the ones about getting away from a life of sin; however, I had difficulty with the ones about the Catholic Church. Something didn't settle right in my spirit. And yes as I have grown older and matured, and became a Catholic Christian myself. These writings are deceptive and are filled with half truths. Thanks for the video!!!

When some Protestants witness true worship (sacrifice), involving rituals, the only conclusion they can come to is that some manner of devilry or witchcraft is afoot.
Why?
Because to the majority of Protestant denominations, worship takes the form of prayer.
Is prayer important to a Catholic? Yes. But it is not worship. It is a lower form of communion. We have much higher requirements for worship. If your highest practices as a Protestant are the lowest form of devotion to a Catholic, you have to conclude that Catholics are doing something bad, because the only other explanation is that you are woefully inadequate in your 'worship' of the Lord. It is convicting.
If you were open to accepting that, it's unlikely you would still be Protestant, so misrepresenting or willfully misunderstanding Catholicism is really the only remaining option to a Protestant in this position.

Judging from the comments, Jack Chick created even more Catholics with his anti-Catholic tracts. In your face, Chickie!

Looking forward to this. Having been exposed to Chick Tracts, I believe the real question is "Are Chick Tracts in any way Christian?"

There’s some heavy humility and meekness on this, however, Jack Chick and his ministry misrepresents a whole expression of Christianity, and that deserves to be thoroughly criticized. Speaking false testimony is just plain abominable.

Being good Christian = being ‘Murican. Can’t say I haven’t seen that sentiment in modern evangelicalism. Especially the type who sing “God bless the USA” as a worship song.

Same folks accuse us of idolatry.
