Amazing! I’m sitting at the dealership and they wanted $140 to change the cabin and engine filter. I watched both videos on how to replace and walked over to the parts department. Ordered both filters for $45. Like Thanos said… Fine, I’ll do it myself!

Thank you. Airflow is down though as can be clearly seen by the dirt collecting on top of filter. I am sure someone has pointed this out below but might be buried under a lot of posts.

Thank you 1A auto! Perfect instructions for a 2017 Outback 3.6r. I just installed an oem Subaru cabin air filter and it has an upward pointing arrow as well as the word "UP" printed on the filter itself. You can see it in this video at 1:24 if you look closely.

From what I've put together so far the filters that says up must point up and the filters that have "airflow" the arrow must point down. In the HVAC trade we are accustomed to wording "air flow" and thats the direction air will flow. Don't know why the manufacturer had to go and make this a head scratcher, even for me as the only difference with the naked eye is the filter media at both ends is W on an "up filter" instead of an M.

I don't like posting negative reviews but this video was confusing and added more difficulty than necessary. Two points I have issues with:

1) At 1:55 it says air flow up, at 2:15 it says air flow down. Confusing and contradictory. I checked the manual and airflow is definitely down. Plus the dirt had clearly accumulated on top so the airflow has to be from top to bottom.

2). At 2:46 she said put the glove box at an angle to reinstall. I held the glovebox in the down and very open position so I could see and install the clips on the pivot points at the bottom first. Once those are in I rotated the glovebox up, squeezed the sides and it poped into position. Much less fumbling around that what I see here.

I replaced the cabin filters in my 2018 Outback and a friends 2015 Outback. Same process on both. Two minute job on the 2nd one after clarifying these two points.

The air flows top to bottom so the replacement filters that have arrows showing air flow direction should point down. Yes, the arrows on the oem point up but they don't say air flow direction. The air flows down so point the arrows down.

This video was incredibly useful, thanks for a clear description for a simple job. As a teen it helps to have a good educational video to access a few times to get the job done right.

Same applies to my 2022 Outback Wilderness (maybe update the title to accommodate: 2010+). Thanks to your video it took 2 minutes to disassemble, drop my HEPA filter in, and reassemble. Thank you!

Looks like you just saved me a chunk of money and educated me in the process. Thank you kindly.

I have 2015 subaru outback. I am having difficulty lowering glove box cover. Does it take strong force to push the sides to disengage the stoppers? While closing the glove box you mention butterfly in the video. I do not see any butterfly stuff in my car. Where are these

When I pushed off the little actuator, it came undone from its other attachment point. It took a few tries but I got it back in at the end.

Did this the other day on my 2017 Outback 3.6R Touring with the help of this video. Thank you so much!

the arrows are SUPER confusing, sometimes the filter say "UP arrow" poitning UP, to mean simply this should face UP from GRAVITY, not airflow. The airflow as far as I know for most subarus is actualyl DOWN, as tested with paper. the air goes DOWN, which is why debris is on the TOP side of the filter. subaru has to decide this to be better i think.

I had no idea it was that easy! I'm used to getting behind the glove box being a real pain!

Acorns and leaves? Add some granola and the patchouli oil smell, and you have yourself some Subaru fuel.

No go on “butterfly clips” with unable to see what they are and how to remove them even if I could see them.
Subaru makes maintenance difficult. Just try replacing a headlight.
Yikes.
