Brilliant video, I live in Wigan and thanks for adding the Central Station, the shame in all this, the 1973 picture, every single building in that picture has since been demolished & the soul of the town destroyed.

Up until the early 1960s. There were two additional railway routes from London to Manchester. The Midland Mainline through Bakewell and the Great Central through Pennistone. 60 or so years after closure. Politicians decide there needs to be more capacity to Manchester and The North. As for Scotland why not reccomence The Thames Clyde Express. We are told HS2 is necessary. But, billions to shave 15 minutes from London to Birmingham? The current reason there's not enough capacity to Manchester is Avanti cancel trains there at short notice.

The rest of the U.K. rail network is currently struggling with capacity when these lines and stations have been closed down and/or demolished/lines ripped up, with a possibility that they will have to be repurposed, demolished and/or reopened - this is criminal and someone needs to be facing criminal charges for this
