I think this is a very informative video. I enjoy watching this and getting a better understanding. Unfortunately, my family and my first cousins do not feel the need to know anyone out of their immediate family.

I always visualize a step pyramid with the common ancestor at the top and each successive generation on a different step. It's hard to explain to people that aren't interested in the technical aspects of genealogy. I get so many family members that say, "Oh, we're all cousins." They can't/don't want to put in five minutes effort to understand the relationships.

Some people consider a first cousin once removed "a second cousin" and they are half right; they are, but they would be second cousin to their first cousin's child. To them, their first cousin's child is their first cousin once removed and vice versa.

Thanks for the video! Recently, I put my paternal 5th great grandfather on geni.com, he was some military guy in the USA revolutionary war or something, but instead of saying he was my 5th great grandfather (which I established through ancestry.com) geni.com said he was my 17th cousin 9x removed, on my mother's side! So now I'm working on documenting on ancestry.com how my mother and father are related. Does that mean they are 17th cousins, or is there not enough information? Thank you!

I have a person who contacted me as a match in my DNA. He has no idea about his family, but it tells him he is my 2-3 cousin with a cN of 152 and 2% DNA on my mothers side. Do I need to check my tree for both 2nd and 3rd cousins. So that would be my G-grandfather or my GG-grandfather, on my mother side, right. Not sure how I will figure which uncle or Aunt he may belong to. Would I be able to figure that out? It does not say about cousin removed or half, so that would be direct ancestor, right. He was adopted so I can give him at least some names but I would like to find out exactly who he belongs to. Thank you so much, I have learnt so much from you. Kim

I have no idea who is my father. I am on multiple sites, only 2-3 close matches and their trees are private. I have been looking for years, just waiting for a reply. What do I do? I have a large amount of Native American in my results, I know it comes from my dad's side, Is there a test to determine the tribe?

My dad’s mother was the firstborn in her family and her mother died in childbirth. My great grandfather later married his sister-in-law. They had several more children. So my grandmother’s half siblings were also cousins on their mothers’ side. How does that change relationships as the family tree goes? For example, my dad’s first cousins were actually half first cousins and half 2nd cousins? My grandmother and her siblings shared a dad and all the same grandparents, but not the same mother.

Question, what is common ancestor of 2nd cousin 2 x removed then?

One thing I have not seen is how to handle double first cousins. My maternal grandfather and his brother married sisters, my maternal grandmother and her sister. It looks like someone who is my second cousin looks like a first cousin in my DNA matches. My second cousin from this line (double) and I match 967cM. A second cousin from another brother and I match 510cM. BTW, my first cousins from the doubles line match between 808 - 862cM. very confusing!

I've just gone mad. I have to assume my dads cousin's daughter is a 'second cousin' Therefor her son and my daughter are 'second cousins once removed.' How the heck did they end up on the same tee ball team? I digress. And I quit.
