alternatively, you can set fire to the stumps, if they are all far enough from other things, which makes the job of removing them much faster and won't use up your durability

I use 200+ birchnut trees in autumn + bearger. 150+ living logs within 2 days.Plus, you won't need to do anything, other than keep his aggro.

I burnt down my forest... I don’t think I’m getting a tree farm anytime soon.

In my experience, hiring more than 6-8 pigs is a bit of a waste, as they can't even reach the trees most of the times and end up pushing each and doing nothing. They also tend to skip their duties at the first chance they get when a troll-bird leaves seeds not too far away, and you have to remind them again and again what they are being fed for. When it comes to fighting treeguards, any pig will join the fight, as long as they are close by, so my advice would be to plant the trees not too far from the pig village.

That being said, I don't recommend employing pigs at all for getting lumber. The Bearger is way more efficient. Sure, kiting him while he takes down trees may be a perilous task, and one better left to the more experienced players, but employing him has its perks: he can work any time of the day or night, doesn't require food, digs up the stumps, and can also moonlight as a miner (can mine a 10x10 area of marble trees in a matter of seconds, that would otherwise take a lot of time and a dozen of pickaxes). The downside is that he's only open for business in summer and autumn.

Also, when he walks through a tree, he takes it down, but for some reason only leaves the stump – the rest of the logs and pine cones just disappear. So you need to make him approach the trees close enough to swing at them, but not too close to walk through them. When he's done felling and uprooting all the trees, walk him further away until he loses aggro. One thing to make him instantly lose aggro is to put some food on the ground, but even a piece of rot will do.
